I think he can play it well, Allegri said few months ago he considers him a regista. Maybe he changed his mind.
I just think Pjanić needs to play in the center of the pitch, not wide. It was different in Roma because they played with wingers so Pjanić was playing centrally while still being able to go forward. In Allegri's system his two mezzala's cover everything up and down and do a lot of the job wingers would usually do. I don't think Miralem is physically gifted nor disciplined enough to help out on defense with strong wide players and still contribute offensively as much as we need him to. Suso raped Evra as soon as Sturaro left the pitch, imagine Messi, Robben, Bale etc.
That leaves two positions: regista and trequartista. I think he will play trequartista this season with Marchisio, Khedira and Sturaro/Witsel behind him unless we somehow get James.

Getting James isn't going to solve our problems behind that position though. Witsel is a smart plug, but again, what we need is someone of the quality of Naingollan if not Vidal. Therein lies the root of this midfield's problems. I can also see us go big for Verratti. James is absolutely not a priority if it came down to a 60m bid on either one of them.
I don't know why you guys keep contradicting yourselves though. You guys say we need muscle and steel in midfield yet many here want us to sign Verratti like he's going to solve that issue. And just because his agent is being outspoken in front of the media, doesn't mean he suddenly becomes available for transfer. Verratti is an impossible signing at this point. This is not some Napoli level club that you can bully. This is the same club that refused to sell us goddamn Matuidi yet I am unable to figure out the new found delusion among people that think we can snatch Verratti away from them.

The fact we can't get Verratti is valid to question, but question the need to get him due to type of player is foolish. First of all he isn't soft and is probably more aggressive than our current 3 starting CMs, but first and foremost better then all of then in general that type shouldn't matter.
I would defenitely rather sign him up then James, even though I feel the latter is bit underrate here, he would be bona-fide gem for us as nr 10.

As hard as it would be there is still a small chance, not enough to discuss it as much as ppl do here, but enough to not make as impossible as Messi. If he forces way out we will be realistic destination (Italian, Juve fan, setting aside whole budget for him etc), until then no point talking about.
And my contention was that there is a difference between the chance to get him and the need to do so.

Nope (1st time Marchisio played regista was under Conte in 13-14, later under Allegri at the beginning of the 14-15 season in our 352 when Pirlo was injured and we still didnt use 4312), we played VMPog with Pereyra only occasionally to rest Pirlo and when Andrea was out injured. we couldnt even use it that much because Vidal and Pogba both had periods of injuries when they missed a lot of games. Allegri played Pirlo whenever healthy and fit, i know because people complained all the time and I defended him (and i was one of Pereyras biggest fans in 14-15). Pereyra played whenever either of our starting 4 got injured, Marchisios and Vidals versatility in playing different positions allowed that, thats how he ended up playing so much because we mostly had one of our 4 CMs injured for a longer period and/or some other struggling with form.
also, Pirlo ended the season with 5 goals 5 assists (scored the 1-0 vs Olympiacos, scored the 1-0 vs Empoli, scored a late 2-1 vs Torino, scored the 2-1 vs Atalanta, scored the 1-0 vs Torino, assisted the 2-1 vs Napoli away, assisted the 2-0 vs Lazio and Palermo, assisted the 1-1 vs Fiorentina, assisted the 3-0 vs Cagliari), how can you say he ddint offer that much? directly contributed to 21 out of our 87 points that season and the 3 crucial points in CL in us even passing the group. big risk defensively? how many crucial errors do you remember from him? how many in big CL games? name them. we were 1-0 up vs Napoli in the SC up until 67th minute when he was playing, when he went off we conceded 2 goals and lost the game. we went to a CL final (which we should have won) and complete a treble that season with him as a starter, but the guy was such a liability to us, we would have been so much better without him. lol
