Balotelli, Osvaldo, Gomez, Torres, etc. Those players would never be anywhere close to a big club in the past.

In fact, I'm not even convinced they'd make it to the professionals. And if so, they don't seem to be talented enough to even warm the bench then. The bar is set too low in modern Football.

Balotelli being praised for something he absolutely sucks at really irritates me.

Gomez and Torres are different cases entirely. Especially Torres was a brilliant striker constistently for a few years until his move to Chelsea.

Felipe Anderson is going to be awesome. The kid is a beast, and he is still only 21. He is driect, has pace and creativity in abundance. It is understandable that his decision making can be questionable at times, but he is still young, and can only improve. I like how he tore Inter a new A-Hole and toyed with Roma's defense on a couple of occasions today. The way he set up that first goal was sublime.

Since we have no scouts (apparently), we should be looking at making purchases like this. He has that oh so important Serie A experience, and Lazio aren't exactly our rivals. I am sure a bid of 25 million or so can get him. After all, we are likely to splurge 18 million on Pereyra and near 15 million on fucking Zaza, two vastly inferior and more limited players.
someone said that Lazio signed him for 8-9m + half of the next transfer fee if they sell him, so a 25m offer would make them only 3 or 4 million profit. unless they get FFP troubles, I don't see them selling.

Maybe if you're British and overuse and undervalue that word. Baggio was brilliant. Romário was brilliant. Torres is average with a run of 3,4 years in his whole career being above average, nothing more.
he was world class at Atletico for a couple of years. I wouldn't call him brilliant, that's a bridge too far. but a great goal scorer

If it's semantics and only players like Baggio & Romario fall into the category of brilliant for you, that's fine, call him something else. But a player of his calibre during his Liverpool days would still be wanted by a lot of big clubs, no matter if now or in the past.

Fair enough. He might have been World class for that period, also at England. But it tells you a lot how a player who isn't all that talented was one of the best in the world for some years. It's sad.

No, it's normal. Pippo Inzaghi was one of the best in the country for many years. Being extremely good at what you do doesn't match people's idea of "talented", but it can get you places.

His "caliber" is only good enough for this generation. He would have no place in the past.

It falls again under what i said, the bar was and is set too low for players who aren't all that gifted like Torres to achieve the entitlement of being the best around.
