i say: just close the whole damn forums...who needs forums anyway?!

if you want to talk to someone, get off your fat ass, out the front door, over to the neighbors and tell them that you backed into the carage door (no offense ;) ) or you think Totti is hot....

I don't agree, at least not with the basic idea. :)

Two posts in less than a minute!!
:extatic:
<--- i'm "the one"
:undecide: nothing new  :p:p

i've been away for the past few days, so i find it flattering in a way that this thread was made in my absence. I know i'm guilty of taking threads off-topic, but i wouldn't call myself a serial offender, as many-a-time, i also try to get threads back on topic. Yes, it gets annoying when threads get off-topic, but judging by previous results, maybe a smiley wouldn't be sufficient. Sure, when people say "guys, back on topic"...they start getting back on topic, but it can quickly disintegrate. It's difficult to control everyone, because people are posting at different times around the world

Here's a sample format from an imaginary thread:

Person 1. Let's talk about football
Person 2. Football football football
Person 3. *Off-topic crap*
Person 4. *carries on off-topic conversation*
Person 5. *carries on off-topic conversation*
Person 1. Guys, back on topic.
Person 3. Okay, sorry, back on topic
Person 2. Football football football
Person 4. *carries on off-topic conversation*
Person 5. *carries on off-topic conversation*

See my point?

I agree that some threads need to be decapitated, including a few of my own, but maybe some should be allowed to continue. Perhaps adding a poll to questionable threads might work, where people vote on whether a thread should be closed or not. Some people might have something useful to add to a conversation, and it's sad if the thread gets closed while they're asleep on the other side of the world, because they'll look like an idiot if they post 12 hours later "hey guys, remember ______ thread? I have something to add: blah blah blah"

Why is there a necessity to go totally off topic? I do not go to Buffon online but I do know how much dedication Vit put into that particular part of the forum but because of some people , all her hard work has gone to pieces
The same happened in the movie thread and I stopped going there until very recently

I actually find it amazing that some ppl are actually questioning why it is wrong for them to continually go off topic

IF I go to a match thread I do expect to read about the match not what some ppl got up 2 or theeir personal life

You have dedicated members here like Dp forever, Fantatista, Edgar Davids, SallyInzaghi and Hydde who talk about football and the match but some seem to think they are interesting enough for us to ignore Juventus and read about their lives

It is not defying authority , its been disrespectful, sadly it is not something that could be stopped by a moderator as you cannot keep telling members and sending them private messages but it all falls on deaf ears

Unfortunately since the turn of the year the quality of posts has gone downmarket and I am not surprised that members who come to talk about football are getting turned off and others cannot be bothered to post as regularly as they used to

well said denco. it is sometimes annoying when ppl goes off topic (though i am one of them sometimes) but i'm all for the idea of martin giving a warning first rather than immediately closing it.

you can't close this forum down, it'd be a disappointment to most of the members.

While I do agree with you, I don't think that it is the match threads or any other serious topic thread that is the root of the problem.

Quite honestly, I try to go on as many threads as I can, and personally, I don't see these match threads or any other serious topic threads going off base.

The problem that we have is that some non-serious threads are being shut down for being deemed as pointless. Well, if they are light hearted threads to begin with, why shut them down if they go off-topic?

If I'm on a serious thread, I, like everyone else expects serious discussion.

But, I'll be guilty of trying to say something funny or to the left of center, but within the structure of the topic. I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as it has something to do with the subject at hand.

I'll only start worrying once we see some Dino Zoff or Roberto Bettega photos

For me, there're different types of off-topics :

1. the topic slowly changes as the thread goes along, but the posts are good.
2. Chit-chats or smartass remarks (which can be quite interesting) ; stopped after a few posts, not much harm to the threads
3. Chit-chats completely ruining the threads, extremely annoying.

With (3), by all means, close the thread

(2) nothing much to worry about really

(1) it's kinda unavoidable but closing the thread would be too drastic. Maybe the mods could help to split the OT part into a different thread. For example, the "why" thread in the support forum has turned into discussions about IQ and it's a damn good thread. So maybe a different "IQ thread" can be used to avoid confusion and to attract more participation??

Many of us had said here how much we hate off topics but guys and gals, admit it, WE ALL DO IT. So stop putting an innocent face and blame others. If every one of us could make an effort the situation would improve without much drama.

BTW, I can see many members are more aware of the OT issue already so I guess it's a start.

Sorry about this poor quality post. It's 1:a.m. in the morning and I'm ZZZzzz
