As for myself; given that I live in the middle of one of the nation's biggest cities and I rarely leave it, it would be senseless to own a car. Especially when you consider that all students (me included) in the Netherlands receive a public transportation pass from the government that allows you to travel with all forms of public transportation for absolutely free.

I'll be looking into buying a car after my studies, though. Because train travel is insanely expensive here.

When I'm at my parents' place, I'll use their car. It's very European. It does 12km to the liter so I can reach pretty far without having to refuel (ie leaving those costs for my parents )

He actually does have a valid point. I don't know if you've ever been here, but the roads are huge. Whenever you want to go somewhere (like skiing, for example) you have to drive a few hundred miles, and you usually travel in large groups. Also, because it can be a 40 minute drive to school (due to traffic, i don't live on a farm), most people "carpool". You make agreements to take everyone else, then another day they take you. If you do things in groups like this, a 5 seater car isn't very helpful.

Though I agree, SUVs and trucks are ugly as shit
