As for myself; given that I live in the middle of one of the nation's biggest cities and I rarely leave it, it would be senseless to own a car. Especially when you consider that all students (me included) in the Netherlands receive a public transportation pass from the government that allows you to travel with all forms of public transportation for absolutely free.
I'll be looking into buying a car after my studies, though. Because train travel is insanely expensive here.
When I'm at my parents' place, I'll use their car. It's very European. It does 12km to the liter so I can reach pretty far without having to refuel (ie leaving those costs for my parents
