In the case of mental health, yes, of course. And especially in the case of bpd. Talking to people is the only available diagnostic tool for a bpd diagnosis in the first place.

It's ironic that people think I am not thinking about this scientifically, but that's because the field itself isn't scientific to begin with.

And again, bpd and the quantity of bpd cases just don't make sense.

You're approaching this all wrong. You can't argue something isn't scientific just because you disagree with some of the results.

Lol, ADD is a psychological diagnosis I don't believe in either.

You know what I do believe in? Autism. That's an actual illness. Not an active kid who should be active because he's a kid.

Law isn't an exact science though. And we all agree laws change. The whole idea behind a diagnosis should be that it is describing the actual illness. Not what we think is the illness or should be the illness.

Therapy itself doesn't mean anything. He means reliable data for a diagnosis.

I have no background in psychology but i have known people with borderline personality and bipolar diagnoses. And while it may not be immediately apparent (particularly with bpd) i do get the impression that i am talking with someone who is sick.

Bpd is not just extreme narcissim. I know plenty of spoiled rich girls whove been pampered their entire lives and are now struggling to navigate the adult word.

Bpd is not that. It is a whole nother animal and i would stay away from anyone (or at least dont have sex with or date) who exhibits that type of behavior. They are a human blackhole

But neither are psychologists. Fuck, I don't even think psychiatrists are. Read the DSM criteria for borderline personality disorder. It's all subjective. It's the subjective verdict of one person about one another.

I'm also not particularly impressed with this argument to begin with. It would mean I could start my own science of how to gain a better aura and then dismiss naysayers because they haven't studied my science.

Sad that this mindset still exists. I thought that outdated thinking was about to die with my fathers generation.

It's people like that who indirectly prevent kids and teenagers from seeking help, by making them feel weak for doing so, and instead give them great advice ala "man up" or "get your shit together", resulting in making things even worse.

It's the complete opposite. To lock yourself in at home in depression or whatever disorder is the easy way, but to go and get help is what really requires strength, considering how low on self esteem those people are at times and how they, in 2018, are still getting stigmatized for doing so.

Oh yea obviously theres going to be flaws when your diagnostic test is checking off a few boxes of personality traits and the difference between a regular person and someone labeled with a personality disorder and put on meds or therapy is that they only checked 6 boxes instead of 7.

Because you cant map the brain and point specifically to one abnormality to say someone is definitively this or that makes diagnostics difficult but that doesnt make bpd a fleeting feeling of discontent caused by a rich upbringing

Clinical depression is an actual mental health issue though. One that we universally agree exists and are now even starting to see in the brain.

This is not a debate I'd like to participate in. I highlighted the dumbest thing I read in the previous page; that you never spoke with a borderline person and felt they were sick, so they cannot be sick. I can't believe a person with an education can say that. Then you followed with saying that you are as qualified to make such assessments as are psychologists. This doesn't have anything to do with whether psychology is a science or not (that's the debate I don't want to participate in, don't care about it either). Psychology is as much a science as is Economics. Still they won't hire you to make policy decisions regarding economy.

Well i agree diagnostics being hazy makes for a ton of people being diagnosed as such when they likely shouldnt be.

Probably a lot of pressure to slap a label on someone so you can suggest treatment and make it look like youre doing something to justify the 300$ hr billing

I'm going to try to put this in simple words:

People with bpd are diagnosed as such by talking to them.

So if you talk to them and they seem normal, that is pretty significant.

A broken bone is diagnosed by an x ray. If the x ray looks fine, your bone probably is too.

This is not some sort of outrageous statement. It's just how they diagnose it. Every day. In millions of cases.
