No, but psychiatry is. I don't trust psychologists either, but psychiatrists (at least in Belgium) are actual doctors. That is to say they are md's who went on to specialise in psychiatry.

If we're talking about stuff like personality disorders and all, I have serious reservations about that. I think most of those are really just fancy ways of saying someone is an asshole.

Anyway I don't want to debate about that really, because I feel like we more or less have the same opinion on this.

Interesting that a lawyer looks down on psychology.

This isn't about looking down on psychology. I just believe we are still in the realm of pseudoscience. Especially because the field undergoes serious changes every so often. I think we have a reasonable understanding about very serious mental health issues like schizophrenia, but we are way too quick in categorising people as suffering from personality disorders. Trump for example is a tremendous asshole and I'm sure he is quite narcissistic. But do we also have to say he's suffering from narcissistic personality disorder? I don't know. In a way I think that's how we take away a lot of responsibility from people who know perfectly well what they're doing. Same goes for psychopaths btw.

So it's a pseudoscience because you disagree with it and that "it" is a minor part of the gigantic field of psychology :baus:

Where do you rank Bipolar disorder and Borderline personality disorder? Fancy way for saying you're an asshole or actual mental diseases?

I have a friend who has been duagnosed as bipolar i can tell you he is definitely not just an asshole. It has pretty much ruined his life for the past 8 years and has not gone away.

Very smart guy but flunked out of grad school because he had an episode and his paper on organic chemistry was nothing but paranoid delusions

It's pseudoscience because it's... pseudoscience. It sounds like science. You have people who sure know how to sell it. But I'm not convinced at all. I regularly read reports from psychiatrists in criminal cases and usually it's just bullshit. Honestly the only thing they say is that the criminal is narcissistic. And then they link it with all kinds of pathologies. No, maybe he's just a cunt.

I can imagine that bipolar disorder is an actual mental disease. There have been people with similar symptoms throughout history and it's very possible that it actually has a biological / chemical root cause. But mostly I believe it is an actual mental disease because people with bipolar don't always make it about them and have very obvious symptoms.

Borderline, no, I'm sorry. I don't believe that shit. I know people with borderline personality disorder share similar traits, but basically they're egotistical cunts. That's what it boils down to. And even if it were an actual condition, I'd still have zero sympathy for them. If anything I'd say we need to remove them from society as fast as possible.

I know my judgment was quick and harsh and that it is kind of ironic, but that doesn't mean it's wrong.

Paranoid delusions might also be a symptom of something larger than bipolar disorder though.

I think you are. It’s a very small group of people who uses disorders as an excuse.

Maybe where you live. I hear 'borderline' every fucking day. It's as if every 15 year old girl who has ever gone to a psychologist got that diagnosis. No, maybe she's just a confused little girl who thinks the world revolves around her.

If it was an actual medical condition a very small percentage of the population would have it (because if a large percentage has it, it is basically normal). The opposite seems to be true. We have borderlines everywhere.

I believe in bipolar disorder because people don't make it about them? People with AIDS and cancer can end up making it about them. Doesn't mean aids and cancer aren't real.

Looks like you may need to gather some more info before continuing in a less generic conversation.

You're mocking me because I don't believe in manuals that used to classify homosexuality as a mental condition.

And btw. It’s not a psychologist who diagnose people with disorders.
In Belgium it's not. I am not entirely thrilled with our psychiatrists either. But at the very least they got a decent education.

I'm mocking you because you don't know what you are talking about; liek the tiem you thought Kobe Bryant couldn't be a rapist.

You don't know what the science called psychology consist of and what type of the scientific methods are used and how they are deployed, instead you retort with anecdotal evidence, feelings and believes.

The first bit is no contradiction. I think many mental diseases have biological causes. Compare it to addiction. Some people struggle much more than others. I don't think that it's because they have any less willpower. I think it's because of a genetic predisposition.

People with AIDS and cancer have actual symptoms that are more than a fleeting feeling of discontent. Same goes for bipolar. I'm sure if they could choose, some of them would rather have everlasting manic episodes. Or just be generally more stable. Have you ever talked to someone with borderline personality disorder? Did you think you were talking to a sick person? Because I sure didn't get that impression. The reason we get people with borderline is because at some point we decided to start pampering people for no good reason at all. The same way Trump is the person he is, because he has always been rich.
