What I didn't expect was the follow up to Cologne's NYE to be Bangalore's. So yeah, it's probably the scale. And here just a couple months ago I was telling a friend, "A single woman can walk downtown Bangalore without being hassled at 10pm... that's not normally the case in the U.S."

But at least I saved my ass in telling her that for everything true in India, the exact opposite is also true. NYE would be it.

I'm surprised Goa would be more of a place for that -- but perhaps that has to do with more of the "party" vibe the state takes on.

And Bangalore overall seems less likely than other parts of India to harbor the backwards types who do that crap as a sort of last-gasp resentment for losing their gender-dominant place in society.

Guess everybody has been influenced by Tone Lōc telling us to do the "Wild Thing".... it is really sad.
Once you realise that there is a vast variety of classes that exist in Bangalore or any other big city here, almost anything is possible. NYE is the kind of event where there's a LOT of people on the streets, and they come out in numbers cos they know that they can get away with such shit. The police, as useless as they are, won't take much action on it anyway, and that makes the whole thing worse.

Goa is definitely that kind of a place cos everyone knows that is the party destination. I've seen a friend get molested (and subsequently beat the shit out of the molester) in Goa 5 years ago. I've never been back there since cos I'm disgusted by it.

Plus, check out this video that surfaced a few days ago of another girl in Bangalore (in an area where Asif used to stay, I think) getting molested by 2 guys on a bike. This has caused a bigger outrage among women here.

I'm surprised at the scale of it, but not that it happened on the first place. I've seen similar things happen in Goa, so it's not surprising at all that they'd take advantage of the situation and the lax mentality of the police to get away with such shit. Seven was right. India is a shitty place.
My gf was is in India in september and felt very unsafe. She's blond and was asked to be in selfies constantly. She's been all over the world (apart from Australia she's been everywhere), but she thought India was very strange and frightening for women at times.

Which is a shame because she also said most people in India were really kind and the country itself was gorgeous.

EDIT: btw I wasn't happy when she told me she'd visit India. I'm sure I was overreacting, but it's kind of sad that men think their gf's / wives are running a real risk in India.

This last bit made me laugh

It has been replaced by a new hope — that, perhaps as a result of the public service they have provided, they will be granted visas to the United States, the home of so many of their favorite things: “The Fast and the Furious,” Vin Diesel and Robert Downey Jr. “I’ve spent so much time getting to know it, familiarizing myself with its states, talking to its people,” Mr. Dubey said. “I feel a bond.”

Dude, I'm not even a woman and the first time I stepped out into Connaught Place in New Delhi, I was swarmed by an army of brown people. My first thought was "Oh shit, pickpocket attack." Instead it turned out they were all just curious and being friendly and asked questions.

And yes, I can attest to be something of a tourist attraction then myself -- fair-haired and about 198cm tall, I had people passing cameras around wanting to take selfies with me. A lot.

I'm not trying to dismiss your gf's experience as something threatening, because I wasn't there. And I know that situations can be different for women than for men. But what you described here sounds precisely like what I experienced ... as a dude ... only for me to later figure out that the threat was a lot more perceived than real. (I had a lot of other anecdotal evidence to suggest I wasn't under threat as an aside.)

You're definitely right. However, with women comes the added sexual curiosity, which is the problem here. Half the guys would want to take selfies, the others would be checking out her ass. :boh:

Btw, thinking of Bangalore, I was recently recalling that great trip on the back of your motorcycle through the bouncy streets of Bangalore at 3am after a Juve match, coming back from Asif's.
