I like massive puzzle of ideas, personalities and identities that he puts into his writing. Not everything is equally successful, but alot of it works. I saw Mulholland Drive 5 years ago for the the first time, I still don't know what the box is all about. I think that I understand the movie, but I don't know what the box is, despite presuming that it's pretty central to the story. That's the most obvious example.
The way he portrays emotions is amazing aswell, the hideous face of jealousy in Lost highway for example.
