or maybe people care too much what society/community thinks of them, too many people walking around with a chip on their shoulder and even more drones walking around repeating what they were programmed to say or do.
Yeah that's the same as what I said, they feel that pressure or care as much as they do because of what they have been taught and told.

so unless you have a phd your potential is unfulfilled? but lets forget that for a second, and think about what matters more being happy or pursuing some ego/society inspired chimera? Dont get me wrong the 2 are not mutually exclusive but this talk of potential and talent is just another tool to make us all fall in line and be goold old agents of the machine. you go after a phd or something because that what YOU want to do.
I understand what you're trying to say. Free choice and all that. That is actually the way I played it. There was only one discussion on the matter, after the initial I never brought it up again.

I still think it's a waste to spend 4 years dominating in school and then decide to be a baby maker.

Regardless of what society makes of it, it's still a useful thing to have if she wants or needs a job in the future.

I agree, people define success differently. To some people they may define success by material possessions/money, other may think of success in higher education and employment, others with family and others with religion etc. Having a PHD would mean nothing to a person that is happy raising a family. I think society in general puts too much pressure on people to go to Uni and get a good job otherwise you're seen as a failure (not true). Not everyone should have high expectations placed upon them because some people just aren't good at certain things.
As someone who went the prestigious PhD route -- and then decided the degree wasn't going to offer me anything I wasn't going to be able to do without it, and thus I bailed grad school -- I can relate.

baby maker? that right there is more sexist than the whole under my husband comment. And it's not about free choice, it's about educated and sound choice, your view is nothing more than a socialization echo. spending your life pursuing a degree you never 'wanted' is the real waste.

It's the feeling you HAVE to go and become a housewife, that "that's what we do in my family" comment.

To be fair, I said PHD 'or something'. Meaning there were a number of possibilities to be had in addition to being a mom.
