The CNN effect (mass media can trigger humanitarian interventions by forcing an issue into the public sphere). In relation to the Iran Protests 2009 and Libya 2011. Argument is that the CNN effect doesn't exist other than for a government to gain support for an issue, its an argument thats been going around since the 60s in regards to the Vietnam War. With Iran on day 1 obama said something about it not being any of their business and the media fraimed it the event as a crisis but one that we couldn't do anything about, libya the UK wanted to intervene but didnt have international backing until about the 17th march - the articles are all fraimed about the US/Germany/Russia not wanted to get involved but that we needed to get involved.
