Im doing an MA, its non stop work.
The CNN effect (mass media can trigger humanitarian interventions by forcing an issue into the public sphere). In relation to the Iran Protests 2009 and Libya 2011. Argument is that the CNN effect doesn't exist other than for a government to gain support for an issue, its an argument thats been going around since the 60s in regards to the Vietnam War. With Iran on day 1 obama said something about it not being any of their business and the media fraimed it the event as a crisis but one that we couldn't do anything about, libya the UK wanted to intervene but didnt have international backing until about the 17th march - the articles are all fraimed about the US/Germany/Russia not wanted to get involved but that we needed to get involved. Q.E.D.

I'm arguing in between. Causality is impossible to prove in this context. Without one of the two coming out and saying exactly how it works. The only fair way to view it is as a complex web of interaction. The CNN Effect is largely disproved. My argument is that the Media can bitch about something all they want, but if a government doesn't have an incentive to act it wont. In the case of Iran they were told explicitly from the off that the US wasn't getting involved. With Libya the UK and France after the first week were fairly vocal about there intention to get involved, whether the media reacted to that or if they reacted on there own is something that I can't prove.
I've done a fair bit of reading on media bias and 'news-worth'. You have to remember that the media (in all its forms) is a consumer industry, they only respond to the uses and gratifications of their audiences. No matter how cynical it gets, it is simple supply and demand. The whole NOTW hacking scandle pissed me off because no one acknowledged that they were just a responce to the culture that society has created.
