Been playing Piano since I was 11. Always played melodies in my head as long as I remember when I was in School but never put them out in paper. 6-7 years composing but been taking it slowly because there is so much knowledge to be gained from the Theory itself.
Actually I just contradicted myself there, composing a Symphony is fast as it gets for a 21 year old

It wasn't until I was about 18 that I really got into them.

It's by no means automatic that you will be familiar with Beatles stuff just because you grew up in Britain, in my experience.
