That's a silly thing to say.

Many people become addicts in the later stage, despite ignoring it in youth (most alcohol).
@king Ale Anything is possible if you concentrate your mind, focus and efforts upon it
Of course there are exceptions but because of different brain processing of risk and reward between pre and post adolescence, you are pretty much fine if you resist the shit during that horrible period of life :D

That I agree with.

However, from what I've noticed, people are generally pretty weak minded. Most of the time they can't fight with some problems and see the escape in such things. Whether it's a family issue, divorce, loss of somebody, seeing a cartoon drawn etc.

Move that 21 to 18 and it's a different story, though. I know a lot of people who were messed up simply because their parents/families militantly forbade them to ever touch alcohol, a cigarette, pot, etc. Those people went apeshit the first time they entered society without adult supervision and ended up unconscious under a dorm bathroom sink ready to have their stomach pumped.

There's something to be said for controlled exposure in youth and demystifying it so that it never takes on these forbidden, totem powers.

Hear hear:

"A child who reaches age 21 without smoking, abusing alcohol or using drugs is virtually certain never to do so."
Are you referring to yourself?

There's plenty of people who abuse alcohol once they turn 21 because they were forbidden to have a normal life.
