see i think true artists just capture their times and experiences, trying to sound like someone from the 60s is disingenuous and betrays art imo bands like the shins, modest mouse, vampire weekend, the xx and beirut produce some pretty good music.
You don't need to copy the music of 60s to not sound like shit. Tell me where is today's creativity or art in music? I mean do you really expect the songs of today last more then a year? I mean they are designed to be replaced by a new single every single month, nothing with lasting value at all, that's not what a true artist should be doing.

And yeah, I know there are good music out there, but you have to have your hands full of flashlights to find anything of value today.

Just look at the rock and pop artists who excelled in that era:

Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy/BS, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Motorhead, Motley Crue, New Order, Dire Straits, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Guns 'N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, The Cure, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Bryan Adams, INXS, Whitney Houston, Soft Cell, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Bob Marley, Blondie etc.......
great era indeed

edit: except for bon jovi :p

90s>>>>>>>>>80s
90s is a close second but 80s is better :D

Thanks! Much better than the reply I was expecting. :p
You're welcome. :)

Tool, Mastodon, MF DOOM, Soundgarden, Daft Punk etc

Tool is no doubt one of the very best bands ever
Tool is a must listen. Especially Ænima, Lateralus and 10000 Days.

yes hip hop, some metal like metallica, megadeth, slayer, testament etc, chicago house, detroit techno but there is so much utter garbage in the 80s that has aged horribly and is truly painful to listen to.
I'm disappointed you didn't mention Iron Maiden in that list. Especially when their best music was released between 80-88(Except Killers).

the abundance of volume should also be taken in consideration, when you have so much output shelf life tends to be shorter

But there is no intent to make the shelf life lasting, there is no intent to put any kind of idea into the song for it to last too. Artists, and songs are changin like socks now, and all of them are mostly the same.

Subjective of course, they are also not many of my favourites, but I bet it compares very favourably to a 00s list.

Oh and -rep for calling The Cure crap.
the music I highlighted generally just sounds overly dated and it's kind of hard to describe... I guess today's pop music kind of reminds me of 80s pop. there is a difference between music that sounds dated and music that sounds of its era

Oh and maybe the problem is the term shelf life? I mean if you are considering such things when you try to create art well then what kind of art is that?
