Tough, as I only really witnessed about 15 years of football history. I can't really come up with anything better in this period of time.

From what I'ver heard about the rest, I'd probably include the "hand of god", and perhaps either the Wembley goal, the 54 or 50 WC finals, Baggios miss or the Wembley goal.

But this was perhaps the best player of his generation, probably among the best players ever, in his very last game as a professional footballer, in the most important footbally fixture in the world doing....this.
Counterquestion: Can you name anything definitely more memorable?

Why I liked 2006?

1. Big teams turned up for this one, we seen the return of France, Germany, Italy and Portugal going far in competitions.
2. Plenty of star studded teams, with no clear winner. Heck even England had a good team, and were considered outside favorites.
3. Plenty of Drama, England and Porutgal penalty shootout (Rooney sending off, and Ronaldo's cheeky wink), Argetina vs Germany penalties, Italy vs Germany semi final.
4. Last World Cup for some of the players we all grew up with; Del Piero, Inzaghi, Totti, Zidane Vieira, Thuram, Beckham, Nedved, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Carlos, etc
5. Final was actually close with no one knowing which way it was going to go. Let's face it, we all knew that Brazil would beat Germany in 2002 and Spain would beat Netherlands, but 2006 geuinely had two in form teams who could not be seperated. Add the sending off for Zidane and the penaltyshoot out at the end.

there you go 5 reasons for liking World Cup 2006, without including Italy winning it

Nah, that is why I'm asking, I got only two definite answers - hand of god and the headbutt.

Maybe the slalom of maradona against england is quite big on my list too.

As a personal thing the whole 2002 WC will be stuck to me until I die, the way the refs let the koreans kungfu everyone will not erode from my memory easily. But that is not a one single incident though.

Same is 2006 and Cannavaro performence as perfect defender.

As you can see I can't think of the third myself. One and two are definete for me, nr 3 is hard one.

Actually one thing pops into my mind above the rest. Is Platini celebration of the CL winning penalty. Considering circumstances that's a strong image.

My most memorable moment of the world cup is definetly zidane's headbutt . The second one has to be barthez vs ronaldo , that was my first world cup , i was 5 years old and i still remember when barthez went all over ronaldo , not very memorable , but it is my first memery .

When my father used to talk to me about past world cups he would continuosly repeat the hand of god moment , the gentile masacre of maradona , englands goal/non goal of 1966 and baggio's penalty .
