To me he fits that position better than a defensive midfielder, and I have never seen him as good ever as when he played there. I'm pretty sure he would deliver more than spotti and el pimpo. Though those two are as you say neither injured nor abscent, so Lippi won't dare to try it anyways.
perrotta played in that position when totti was injured, in as roma.

This is world cup, and not time for testing players in differant positions.

I don't see it as testing really. :) Totti and Del Piero has not lived up to that role (yet anyways). Perrotta has been outstanding in it for months. Of course not in the Italian NT, but still. I think its worth 45 minutes versus Ukraine(ya I know quarter finals etc) since there is a lot of quality to fill his boots in middle of the pitch.

Then again, perhaps Totti wakes up a bit after this penalty. Though I don't think so, he doesn't really feel match fit.

I don't have a clue why Lippi doesn't field Inzaghi. Start the man for a change and see what he can do because I don't think Toni and Gilardino are in sync enough together at the moment. It would be stupid to change the midfield all of sudden because those three have been quality and are the only three you really have...plus fielding Perrotta along with Gattuso allows the wing backs to push up more which is essentially the reason why you're at this stage now.

Buffon

Zambrotta - Nesta - Cannavaro - Grosso

Perrotta - Pirlo - Gattuso

Inzaghi - Toni - Totti

How does the suspension system work coz I thought Rhino is suspended for this game for 2 yellow cards in seperate consecutive games
It is very simple actually,

1. Teams that go to the 2nd round will be stripped off their warnings

2. However if a player were to pick up 2 consecutive yellows after the 3rd game of Groups Stage and his team advances to the round of 16, he is suspended for the next game (e.g Essien)

3. Since Gattuso has only collected a yellow in the group stage and another yellow in the Australia game, he gets to play

To be sincere, i feared the australians more than Ukraine or Switserland. IMO Australia is a better team than Ukraine. The difference is that Uk have Shevchenko which is a worldclass finisher and can create real havoc.

This game doesnt depend on the enemy, but on how Italy plays. If Italy is really on its day, theres nothing the ukraninan will be able to do. Sheva in Milan is lethal... but that is mainly because he have a lot of wonders around him, which give him space to do his tricks.
In Ukraine he needs to do the work all alone and this can help Italy defense to nullify him..as he is the main thread.

I would suggest a team like this:

Buff
Zamb-Canna-Barza-Grosso
Rhino-Pirlo
Camo Totti DP
Pippo/Toni/Gila

Lippi has not used this formation in the whole competition and he used to play like this without totti....... rememebr the game against the germans Holland and germany i think? Italy did very good in those 2 games with this formation.
With Totti and Dp thee we dont have any excuse to not overcome Ukraine Defense.

Im not underating Ukraine but im being sincere........ Italy needs to go out to win and this is the time.

I can see Ukraine looking for tips from Shevchenko. This game is easier compared to playing against Australia, however the Italians must be prepared for a twist somewhere in the game as everybody knows Shevchenko's reputation.

As for now, everybody apart from Italians will be rooting for Ukraine to win. I see this as an additional incentive for Italy to win the cup. Since they have nothing to lose, they might as well go for it.

Italy 2 Ukraine 0

Analysis coming up soon

I have a lot of respect for lippi, but I don't think that anyone understands why he is is using iaquinta. he is PURE crap and shouldn't even be in the squad.

Perrotta is useless, especially with an already much better Gattuso in the line-up. Perrotta's running and just running can be useful, but Perrotta simply lacks quality. They guy is only a quantity player.

Lippi's constant shuffling of the team is getting on my nerves, it was the same thing he overdid in his last season with juve.

So you want to play four strikers (DP a left midfield, who are we kidding?), two offensive midfielders, one defensive midfielder who basically only attacks and one fullback who's down the flank all the time. That would mean you have four more or less defensive players.
