Agreed.

HOWEVER I believe that such a tackle, aimed at the ankles, should in fact be a red with several week suspension. The fact that IN REALITY that NEVER EVER is a red changes the perspective though. Predetermined red card, just like a lot have been in this WC.

De Rossi should be raped for all I care.

it was undoubtedly a yellow, and was a very dangerous challenge, but it's just not the type of challenge that draws a straight red in the first half of a game. if he hit the shins, it's a different story, but that's not what happened.

de rossi is just an idiot, though i do feel bad for totti, it sucks to be in his position right now.

We were the better side in the first half and had more of the posession. That's all there is to it. The De Rossi red was deserved but the Mastroeni one was not.

75% of this board thought the score would be 3-0 Italy.
It's not that you were better it's that Italy sucked. This is plain self destruction. I agree Mastroeni's card wasn't deserved though. He shouldn't have done it anyway. Just like De Rossi he's an idiot.

looking at it, USA's red card is justified too.

The guy just goes for Pirlo's feet.

De Rossi violently hits McBride's face ==> red
Mastroenni violently hits Pirlo's ankles ==> red

FIFA has been clear on that. If you attack the players integrity, it's red.

Ankle is just as bad though. Believe me, I have suffered similar challenges and whereas you usually recover well from such attacks on the chins (unless your leg is broken of course :D) the ones on the ankles hurt more and are more dangerous. The thing here is that in fact it should always be a straight red, but that simply never is done in reality. Refs need to have a certain standard.

True, but as Andries said, a slide tackle from the front is very rarely a red card offence.

What I don't like in World Cups is #1 that they try to give refs from every continent a run instead of just getting the best in the world, and #2 they seem to introduce new 'rules' to the referees which are enforced much too zealously in the opening stages of the tournament until a balance can be found. That explains the farce that was Denmark vs South Africa at France '98

no one expected such a powerful US.this Convey kid is damn good and talented.remember his name :D
P.S.the South American refs think every match is a match in South America.this ref used his cards too much.Mastroeni didn't deserve a red IMO.

I play as well and as any player is aware, it hurts like a bitch being hit anywhere. Surely though, while watching a tackle, it looks far worse when you imagine a shin being snapped in half around a guys foot :D

I think that US tackle wasnt as bad because it was really a case of incredibly poor timing, while de rossi was just in it to hit the guy.

Back o the game, peace

after checking the highlights again, I guess the red card for USA was fair also, the guy wasn't going to the ball at all. that was a nasty tackle.

If I recall correctly (heard it in one of the early games in the wc) the commentators said something about the ref base agreed that such challenges (going in with both feet with the studs) deserves red. And with Italy already down to 10 men it must have been a no brainer.

Dammit, I was posting here instead of watching the highlights. Should've had another look at Mastroeni's red.

Italy making a brighter start.

..... another red card (this time not straight). Ridiculous. Not a bad call this time, but only an absolute bloodbath would warrant 3 players being sent off in 47 minutes
