Ref Simon warns Totti

Brazilian referee Carlos Simon, who’ll officiate Italy’s opener against Ghana, has warned Francesco Totti not to simulate fouls.

“I have already taken charge of a World Cup game featuring Italy. In Japan and Korea, when they played Mexico in the group phase,” he explained.

That tie ended 1-1 and Totti was booked for diving – an incident Simon remembers very clearly.

“I was forced to show him the yellow card, as these are the FIFA regulations. He simulated a foul in midfield and I had no other choice.”

Simon has been chosen to officiate the Azzurri’s 2006 debut against Ghana on Monday and was interviewed on Italian radio station Radio Spazio Aperto.

“I am not accustomed to handing out yellow cards gratuitously. I prefer to open up a dialogue with the players and perhaps give them a less severe warning.”

There are question marks over the temperament of Marcello Lippi’s men, in particular Totti, who was sent off in that 2002 tournament and banned for spitting at Dane Christian Poulsen in Euro 2004.

“Football is a dynamic contact sport, but if warnings don’t work, then I turn to the cards. I see no difference between the Italian and Brazilian players, so I doubt the Azzurri will be tougher to deal with. We have all been ordered to be severe and punish the worst fouls with a red card.”

Franz Beckenbauer infuriated the Italian group by suggesting the Calciopoli scandal would distract the players and rule them out of the group of favourites. “I really don’t want to comment on that statement,” noted the referee.

Simon then explained his refereeing technique and what qualifies him to be in this World Cup in Germany,

“I am physically very fit so that I can always be close to the action. I try to apply the rules of the game with a relaxed and intelligent approach. I have a lot of experience in various international competitions, such as the Intercontinental Cup Final between Real Madrid and Olimpia Asuncion, while I’ve also officiated five Brazilian Championship Finals.”

tbh i think italy will dissappoint again
I highly doubt that. Del Piero, Toni, Totti, Inzaghi and Cannavaro are at the peak of their careers and this may well be their last World Cup. I dont think there in the mood to waste time and lose this one.

Exactly, Lippi is there. He knows how Del Piero and Totti play, he's seen them grow up together. I am sure he will go all the way in this tournament.

anyway about the news of referee and totti. i think its not good that ref said that publically, because as we remember totti got sent of in last world cup and imo it really wasnt deserved red card, so basicly this news shows as the ref is against italy in the match. ofcourse we can say he just warned him more because of what happened in euro with totti, but imagine if something like dissallowed goal or bad call with offside happens in the match it starts some speculations about referee imo.

not good move from referee at all.

Lippi to wait until 11th hour - PA Sport

Italy coach Marcello Lippi will wait as long as possible before naming his side for their World Cup opener against Ghana on Monday in the hope that Alessandro Nesta will have recovered from injury.

The AC Milan centre-back has been unable to train regularly since Tuesday as he is struggling with a muscular injury.

"I will decide on the eve of the game who will play," said Lippi.

"For the time being I am only thinking about getting my players in top condition for our opening game against a rival which has little by little recovered the form of their best players."

Italy are already without injured duo Gianluca Zambrotta and Gennaro Gattuso for the Group E clash in Hannover, and Lippi is desperate for Nesta to recover.

"As always, I hope to have all my players available."

"In the past few days, Zambrotta, Gattuso and Nesta have struggled with injuries, but we cannot be negative."

"We still hope to have Nesta back. In any case I have made sure that all my players feel important and that above all, our main strength is the group and not individual players."

is it even ETHICAL for a referee to come out with his opinion on this matter ??

..and just days before the game ??

No...and to both teams, really.

To mention it is a slap in the face to Italy.

To mention it is to be unfair to Ghana, as well---after all, if Totti dives, he gives the penalty and helps Ghana.

Why he mentions this ahead of time is beyond me.

Ref has showed no sense of professionalism if i was in charge of picking refs for the matches i would personally cross his name! This is a personal attack which in my view is uncalled for!
