I'm not discounting Ale at all but even if we had kept Diego I still think there wouldn't be adequate service. Diego IMO would have struggled again this season because he would have had to drop away from goal to pick the ball in midfield just like last season. One player can't do it all by himself.

Good. His runs when on the counter are good for a change, all he needs is a good Zanetti-like cross and you'll have a one-on-one with a good chance he'll bury that one.

It sure is but the chances the mighty DP fashions from FKs aren't exactly 1.00 ratio. Iaquinta scores, never mind how many chances he needs, he scores and actually tries. Our other tall forward has only started trying recently and our two SS traditional eat up chances.
