Ivar is gonna be a badass.
Ivar the Boneless and Ubba the terrible. I'm reading a book about Ragnar and the Vikings raids into England right now, bit different then the show on key details, one of them showing more of Ivar and Ubba, and when I heard the baby boys name in the series, me and my bro high fived :D

First book in a series.
It's well-written and I like the setting but like in his other books, Bernard Cornwell tends to portray larger-than-life protagonists whose lives are just not believable :D

Still well worth the read though, I read all of them so far.

This is by far the best edition on the sagas, it contains Ragnar Lodbrok's story.

I always recommend the primary sources. Try the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, it describes the Viking invasions. It's a decent read.

I will add that to my list.

But you can't trust it completely, from what I understand, as it was written by the Anglo-Saxons, so it's going to be biased. I'd like to find something written by a modern historian, using primary sources and archaelogical evidence to try to decipher the past. It's always going to be cloudy, they were called the "Dark Ages" for a reason. :)

Of course you can't trust it completely but I like to read the original stuff.

I disagree with the use of Dark Ages, but that's another matter entirely.

I haven't read too many non-fiction books on the period but you can usually trust Osprey books.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I am sure I would love to read the Chronicle. I fucking love medieval / dark ages history, though I usually am more interested in English history from the time of the Norman conquest to the end of Elizabeth I's reign.

I would just be more interested in a modern history on the Viking attacks which uses all available sources.

The term "Dark Ages" often means different things for different people. I don't use it as a derogatory term. Like some use it to mean that after the Western Roman Empire fell, the "light" or Europe was extinguished and hence the times were "dark."

I use it more to refer that the history is not as certain. The sources not as plentiful and varied as they would become after around 1000 AD.

Personally, I consider the Dark Ages of England from the Fall of Rome to the Norman Conquest. And from what I understand that is still a shady period where events are not so easily established.

btw, I love talking history, do we have a forum or thread somewhere on the TUZ where these things are discussed? I really like talking about the Middle Ages, The Crusades, anything Hundred Years War, WWI, WWII.. really just about anything European history I can get down with. lol

@Trequartista just bought me the book you recommended; The Saga of the Volsungs. Based on reviews it really is the ultimate norse-mythology book.

You won't regret it. Viking sagas are epic.

I have this baby, 848 page of viking stuff.

I think I made a mistake, Ragnar Lodbrock's sagas are included in the same manuscript as the Volsungs but it does not seem to be in this edition. You can still cancel the order, if you want Ragnar Lodbrock, buy the one you recommended, it's a good edition from what I read.

My bad. The Volsung still has great stories though.
