Hamburg's Van der Vaart cool over Juventus switch

Despite being courted by Italian giants Juventus, Hamburg's want-away Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart seems to have cooled over a move to Italy.

The 24-year-old midfielder, worth 23 million euros (33.7 million US dollars) in the market, had been set to move to Valencia in the summer until his club blocked a deal and Hamburg admitted last week they have spoken to Juventus about transferring him.

But in an interview in German magazine Focus, van der Vaart says Spain is his preferred destination followed by England with Italy a distant third.

"Spain is my absolute favorite, because my mother Lolita is Spanish," said the Dutchman, with January's transfer window set to close on February 1.

Van der Vaart is under contract at Hamburg until June 2010, but can be released on a fixed transfer of 1.5 million euros (2.2 million US dollars) in 2009, so for Hamburg to get their money's worth the Dutchman will need to leave this summer.

Van der Vaart was heavily fined by Hamburg when he was photographed last August with a Valencia shirt and the Dutchman has made no secret of his desire to play Champions League football.

I think the latest news is cooked up by the media. This guy's been yapping about his dream move to Juventus for a while now,and despite the Valencia incident last year,i dont think anyone would change their words so soon.Days earlier he was talking about wanting to come to Juventus so he can help us in overtaking Inter, and now the papers write that he says he prefers spain.Bullshit.He's ours!

Secco: Hey Raf, I've just read in Tutto Sport that you would like to join Juve.

VDV: Sure... I mean the club, tradition, trophies and...

Secco: Ok ok.... you know that we only sign free players.

VDV: But you have payed 13M for Sissoko!!!

Secco: We only pay such amount for average players you know Almiron, Tiago...

VDV: So?

Secco: We can figure out a solution... lets start negotiation now and thanks for my skills we can finalize it at 2010... you will become a free agnet then right?

VDV: WTF!

Secco: All you have to do during this period is to drop offers you might recieve from the likes of Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Chelsea....

VDV calling Focus magazine with next day headlines...

"Spain is my absolute favorite"

Nothing new coming from VDV, and I don't really wish to see him in a Juventus jersey.

Sure I know he is a captain of Ajax + Hamburg and is performing consistently for Netherlands and Hamburg this season. His creativity and his goals will definitely help us, but then again his character leaves something to be desired

1. Injury and controversy prone, with the latter disrupting team atmosphere. If for some reason Juventus doesn't perform, I can see VDV doing the same to Juve too, then he will say about joining a Spanish club, he likes England, he is homesick etc etc

2. I rather Juventus focus on Giovinco + Marchisio. I see VDV hampering Giovinco's progress,

3. If I'm a Hamburg fan or a Hamburg official, I will definitely be pissed off seeing VDV posing with a Valencia shirt and signing a Juventus shirt a few months later. VDV doesn't behave professionally as a footballer.

4. He stated that he wants to join Juventus so that he can beat Inter. This is definitely a welcoming news for Juventus fans. To be honest I will also be happy to hear this. But everybody knows that Zlatan and VDV are enemies. And both of them didn't make their deep rivalry a secret either. Somehow I see that before the Juventus and Inter game both players will hit out at each other again on the press and on the pitch, not something that I like to see in Juve players. I see this more like a personal agenda compared to his commitment in helping the team

I will not lose sleep if VDV doesn't join Juventus, but will definitely jump on Secco if Giovinco is gone for good

guys wake up! VDV wants out. Hamburg is hardly a top notch place. Our squad in Seria B (which is pretty much unchanged this year), could have beaten them. That's why he wants out. Players like VDV want to play for the best club possible. Juve have an opening, he'd take it.
But the obsession with Giovinco and Marchisio is sickening. Look what happened to established players who were "promising" for Juve. I am talking about Tiago, Almiron, Marchioni, Molinaro and the list goes on. Just read on their players pages before they actually started playing. People were psyched.
Marchisio and Giovinco are far from being a finished product, and in a big club like our are very unproven. Look at Palladino!!! Until they prove they can do it, VDV is a much better option. He's young, and is willing to come. Don't start saying "oh I don't want him anyway." He's a good player and will make us proud with his football. Who care's that now he is desperately trying to find a better situation for himself?

You know, for all the reasons I've heard to reject a great player, this one is the most foolish. Hamper Giovinco's progress?

It's like nobody knows where these players actually play.
