By 'they' you mean religious leaders or Al Qaeda/random group?
Religios leaders but it doesn't even have to be them. You know how you get the news, no one in lets say this small x town in Iran has the chance to see the film but they've heard someone has insulted their prophet somehwere in the world and that's reason enough to rage.

I am allowed, I'm not a muslim.

In Shia Islam you often see depictions of Muhammed.
I'm sorry but you need to study Shia Islam better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depictions_of_Muhammad - Read about Shias and depictions here.

"In Shia Islam, however, images of Muhammad are quite common nowadays, even though Shia scholars historically were against such depictions"

There is nothing there that say that in Islam the representation of the prophet is acceptable.
I never said so. Look thru the quotes.

In the link you mentionned, they just that some sects in " Iran" are tolerant towards it, but the religion itself, hadiths forbidd the representation. That why i said for all muslims it's forbidden. Tolerance it's another matter.

Again. I've never said the opposite.

I said that you could see depiction in Shia Islam, you said "No". Nothing else.

I'm not a student of Islam and can therefore not say the slightest of what your scriptures say or don't say.

I got your post wrong, i thought you meant that in some sect the representation is allowed. Wich isn't.

@Cheesio, that is your opinion, just like their opinion about you would be the same. So the correct answer to the question remains: depends on the sect. But i dont think anyone serious about researching and making a historical work would be hung up on that point. Many works/documentaries were made without infringing on that sensitivity. I do believe that one who would stray from that is only doing it to make a point, and thus his academic work is to be disregarded.

There is one text for all muslims, and like i said to Maddy, it's clear from Hadiths, and the " Ijtihad " that the representation is forbidden, if some sects are tolerants toward it, it's another matter.

Makes sense.

Anyways, it'll be interesting to see how Islam evolves in the time of globalization and information. The Muhammed provocations will never stop and you'll never get the western world to leave freedom of speech behind - except for something more 'free'.

So it'll be interesting to how muslims will react to them. Of course an increase in the general living standard will do a lot (especially [objective] education) to decrease those sort of reactions.

In Denmark most muslims seems to just ignore it - which is smart.
