Police say 6 shot near Baltimore nightclub

- This country... :disagree:
Haven't you seen The Wire? This thread is different.

This sounds like a slippery slope fallacy to me. There is no evidence that this neanderthal even paid any attention to Sarah Parah or her ridiculous target map. Again, he seems to have taken offense that Giffords was too far right.
It's a complete stretch to say a nut job had any capacity to heed the words or implied suggestions of someone else rather than construct their own bizzaro mental picture of the world.

That said, encouraging it cannot be a good thing either. We may not be in a backwoods run by corrupt Arab leaders, but amping the virtual war rhetoric is playing with fire in a culture where violence is often promoted as a solution to problems.

Al Gore might not have called for an assassination, but the point is his rhetoric on Global Warming might cause someone to snap. The world is going to end tomorrow unless we eliminate ourselves, so me, the crazy person, is going to go kill a bunch of people because if not... we're screwed.
Dude, putting a gun target graphic on someone's hometown and saying your house is going to flood if you don't cut down on the SUVs ain't the same ballpark -- it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same fuckin' sport.

It's the same argument in the case of the Tea Party (whatever that means in this case). Media pundits and social revisionists like Mark Potok blame the speech of one group instead of what actually led to the shooting, i.e. obvious failure of our mental health system and authorities to recognize this guy is a threat. That's why I think these sort of folks just can't wait for someone to get killed to spread their agenda. They are incredibly disingenuous.
You have to be pretty sick to view public executions as a conspiracy to make themselves look bad.

It isn't if one has a tendency to overreact, or has a certain political bias.

Obama has said in the past that his crew would bring a gun to a knife fight while running against McCain, yet I don't recall seeing any Democrats making a stink about that remark.

But this is typical in politics. Everyone has double standards. One can easily see what side someone is on through these discussions.

I just can't equate someone who looks at scientific data and shares fatalistic conclusions on the same level as someone who doesn't like your politics and calls for a targeted "hit" on you personally of some kind.

The religious guy on the corner can be whining that the sky is falling, humanity is evil, and the judgment is near. But that isn't the same of saying I don't like how someone voted so I am going to call them out personally for retribution.

And if you don't think people should allowed to share a scientific conclusion based on research, we may as well prohibit religious expression.

No question, that's a terrible choice of words.

Yup.

So, lets get this straight. Loughner's favorite books consisted of Mein Kampf and Communist Manifesto, he hated religion, he apparently grew up in a Jewish family, and he ended up gunning down an American Congresswoman who also grew up in a Jewish family?

Uh huh. This guy has no idea what the hell he is. Unfortunately, all of this will be used as evidence in an insanity plea.

Where's the evidence of Palin or anyone else calling for a "hit" on a political enemy? And no, I'm not talking about placing a bullseye on a district. I'm talking about an actual threat.

I absolutely ABHOR Palin and her retard crew, for the record. But a lot of folks seem to partake in the vitriolic banter without even knowing it.

You know me. I'm a scientist who lives by the scientific method. Don't get me wrong here.

"Hit" is a loaded word here. But she was clearly placing visible targets on an enemy. Call it submarine wars, lawn darts, getting somebody out of office, what have you. It certainly wasn't a suggestion that we find crude oil bubbling in her backyard.

That isn't a threat that should hold up in a court of law. But how else is any reasonable person supposed to interpret bulls-eyes of a gun target placed on someone else by a woman who prides herself on posing with guns? If she did that to me personally, I'd take it as a personal threat.

And what does this have to do with this shooting? Looks like nothing at all. Yet some still try to tie this nonsense to Loughner.

So what do you recommend happens in the future with a similar poster to Palin's? Advocate a ban?

Watching Bill Maher on Leno, and he's really not getting any laughs. Looks like a train wreck to me. Topic is the Tea Party and Conservatives.
