What I don't understand is how rhetoric like, "this country is being destroyed" can be considered hate or violent speech. Someone on CNN is trying to make that argument now.

To me, I'd say the perpetual denial that this nation is in dire straits causes more rising tension. For government officials to go on TV and claim the economy is recovering month after month after month, while not even admitting real unemployment is above 16%, is a smack in the face to those that haven't been able to find work. Continue this game and of course folks will get angry, with a vast minority of people being pushed over the edge. People are fed up with the arrogance of officialdom.

The fact is, we can't have any real discussion in this nation because nobody admits to the real problems we face. And no, that doesn't include God, Gays and Guns.

But this Loughner guy was clearly crazy. Hell, the Army wouldn't even let him in. That should sound alarm bells right there.

People have been saying this country is going to sh*t since the 1700s. It's a tradition, Andy.

The worst ones are those who act like they just invented this idea. :pado:

Call it the Vinman school of American societal progression. Doesn't matter if Scirea is on the squad, it sucks and the team's all going to hell. :D

And the focus on the short term economics is just a reflection of our short political attention spans.

Now it's frankly the opposite. Now the message is, "nothing to see here, all is well, move along", when that really isn't the case.

Kids in the wealthy tiers of China look at the rest of the world like last century's has-beens, no question. The American middle class is pretty f*cked, but it's not like it's going to happen here before it does in Europe and Japan first.

Um, I'm not really sure what you're referring to there. We've gone through decades of credit expansion and consecutive bubble blowing, with nobody really caring until the bubble bursts. And even then, people were always convinced that the market for whatever would return. Both parties are at fault for it. But this is incredibly faulty thinking when we continuously offshore our productive capacity while running up massive deficits. You have to pay the piper some time.

So this isn't a short-term problem, it's a long-term problem and it does include our political system.

Not sure where Palin comes into this. She has that stupid bullseye thing, is a dumb bitch, but from what we know the shooter had nothing to do with her.
Obviously, they aren't directly related. But that doesn't matter.

It's the rhetoric that's important. Sharon Angle can suck a dick too.

This could have easily been motivated by "dumb bitch hate speech".

Already has happened to Japan.

You've got to realize that one of the reasons we have it so good here is because we have the world reserve currency. The government can run massive deficits because of this fact. If that was to change, all of those advantages in pricing would be no more, and all those dollars would head back home to the US. Folks believe this would never happen but I'd say to them: it already is.
