So if at the beginning of Season 16\17 we will be 3rd in ranking - Season 17\18 we will have 4 teams in CL and it's earliest we can have 4 teams right? I mean there is no possible scenario where we can have 4 teams in CL in season 16\17?
Italy needs to outscore the EPL by 4 pts this season for that to happen. Unlikely but certainly not impossible.

last season's points with juve in the cl final and the other italian clubs not choking in the el: 13.571 vs 19.000

considering pl clubs' form this year, it's far from impossible. lazio, napoli, fiorentina and juve might do their job, i'm not sure about roma.

Barcelona to become second in its group, drawing chelsea, while sevilla heads off city, arsenal is arsenal and united gets shafted by psg

Very unlikely, not impossible
rather city finished second and get drawn out to Bayern or something.

They will go far in the EL, so best they get knocked out in the second round instead

I modeled it out. It is certainly possible, but it will be difficult. The most important thing working in our favour is that somehow the EPL ended up with 8 teams in European competition this year (please someone tell me how they pulled that off?), either way, the result is that each point an EPL team earns is divided by 8. There are currently 6 EPL teams in the competition. Serie A on the other hand had 6 teams in the competition, and now has 5. Each point a Serie A team earns is divided by 6. As we go further into the tournament, each point for Serie A will go much further than one for the EPL.

A few other things that could help:
-Strong EL showing...If a team won it (Napoli I'd imagine) or if we had two teams in the final (Napoli, Fiorentina).
-Two teams in the knockouts...By qualifying in the knockouts you get 4+1 point...if Both Juventus and Roma got there, with Roma getting some easy initial matchups to help them get through a few rounds, and us going far irrespective of matchup (because we're actually good), that would also help a lot.
-More EPL choke jobs - a team finishing 4th in the group would be huge, but really I think only Arsenal has that risk...maybe City if Sevilla wipes the floor with them, and Gladbach win the final game. Obviously a team finishing 3rd would be mixed: they'd forgo the 4+1 reward for qualifying for the round of 16, but would have the full Europa league to earn points in. City in Europa would scare me to be perfectly honest.

If anyone is interested, I did build a model to calculate it...The main conclusion is that it will be a challenge (but doable) to get the spot next year, but the following year, Serie A is currently on track to get the spot back. The current coefficients for '16/17 are 51.58 and 51.16 for Serie A and the EPL respectively.

After scanning some of the above comments, I think a miracle scenario would be one where Arsenal finishes fourth, and the majority of the EPL teams exit the at round of 16. Meanwhile, Napoli wins the Europa League, and the other two perform well. In the UCL, if Roma perform well, and get past the round of 16 (by a miracle draw), and we get to at least the Semis...furthermore, dominance in the ties is important too...2 wins, instead of winning on goal differential also goes a long way. If a scenario even approaching this would occur, Serie A would not only have 4 spots next year, but have a nearly insurmountable lead for the EPL the following year.

The thing is it is possible for EPL teams to not qualify group stage... DK looked solid vs Porto, for Chelsea won't be easy to win 2 games.. same for MU and CSKA, very even group, all teams have 3 points.. Arsneal 50% will end last in group.. they need miracle, Sevilla can smash MCity, that 2 week break will actually benefit them, they looked horrible vs us. + We must defeat Mcity at home no matter if we win 2 games vs Germans.. And of course Roma must win Bayer..but it's less likely to happen so 4 Italian teams will play in EL and ofc Perfect scenario is Italian Semi final :weee:

It's just hilarious that we are battling the EPL for this fourth spot. Never thought I'd see that :D It really does make a difference when the Italian teams start to take the Europa League seriously...

West Ham got in through the Fair Play League:

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/26/west-ham-europa-league-fair-play-place

And look at the reporter's attitude.

A celebration of a mediocre team getting a chance in European competition?

No.

West Ham’s new manager will have Europa League football to contend with after the club qualified through the fair play league.

It's an inconvenience.

What exactly does playing in the EL do to harm West Ham?

They weren't going to get relegated this season.

The best they could hope to do is compete to qualify for the EL next season - treating it as an achievement and then trying to get out of it as quickly as possible, in all probability.

You expect Arsenal will finish last in their group after Bayern shaft them in the back to back games. City will flounder, Chelsea also. United might get a QF run if they are lucky. Roma will choke for Italy but we will go far. Fio and Napoli will do well in the EL.

What really matters is the EL sides winning all of the group stage matches, that's where you clock up the points.

There is a "delay" of one year, Italy needs to outscore EPL by 4 points this season to get a fourth place for season 2017/18. If Serie A overtakes EPL at end of 2016/17, there will be 4 Italian teams in CL for season 2018/19.

They are all so scared about potentially being relegated, which could happen to a lot of these teams from one season to the next.

The money is such in the Premier League that if you're not in it you are nowhere, they just want to be part of the league, it's that sad.
