Burke is right. 5 years out is ridiculous. That's like getting convicted for manslaughter at age 18 and not having to serve time until you're retired. Many of the players and coaching staff responsible may no longer even be around then.

Something has to be done to make them face sanctions sooner... even disqualifying them for Euro 2008 seems too far out. Home match bans are a start.

Zurich - Fifa will consider banning Turkey from the 2010 World Cup as punishment for the violence at Wednesday's playoff match against Switzerland in Istanbul, Fifa president Sepp Blatter said on Thursday.

"We will act tough," Blatter said. "The catalogue of sanctions extends from a simple warning to suspension of the federation, which could mean exclusion from the next international event."

Blatter said Fifa's disciplinary committee will start its investigation immediately and decide on sanctions by Dec 9, the date for the draw of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

"In the truest sense of the word, fair play was trampled underfoot," Blatter told a news conference at Fifa headquarters. "This is unworthy of football. Football should promote understanding among peoples. This didn't happen here."

Blatter, who is Swiss, said he found it "difficult to speak as a Swiss and as a Fifa president about something that concerns both Switzerland and Fifa. But it's my responsibility."
Blatter said Marcel Mathier, the Swiss lawyer who heads the disciplinary committee, will refrain from considering the case.

The two teams tied 4-4 on aggregate, but the Swiss advanced to next year's World Cup in Germany on away goals.

"If a team that has won cannot celebrate on the pitch and instead have to run off like thieves, then something is wrong," Blatter said.

After the final whistle, both teams raced from the field apparently to escape angry fans. A scuffle between players from both sides ensued in the tunnel on the way to the locker room.

Swiss defender Stephane Grichting was injured in the brawl and hospitalised with a groin injury, the Swiss Football Association said.

Some of the violence was caught by television cameras.

Swiss player Benjamin Huggel kicked Turkish trainer Mehmet Ozdilek in the back of the legs as the two teams left the field. Turkey's Alpay Ozalan tried to kick Huggel in retaliation but instead made contact with another Swiss player in front of him. Huggel then grabbed Alpay around the neck and fell to the ground, with other players, coaches and security guards piling on.

Blatter said Fifa would consider a range of severe sanctions against Turkey.

It's not Blatter's "responsibility". He shouldn't be involved in this one as he's obviously not going to be objective. Why Blatter is still the Fifa president is beyond me anyway.

I also believe Turkey should not be banned. Things like that happen and really, banning Turkey but letting Switzerland of the hook is a crime.

Dude it's not the first time these things that are happening.did you watch telegol last sunday on Star tv?Did you hear what the commentator said?(Mr.Serhat) Is he against Turkey also?All he was talking about was logical.
I myself,Is an Armenian Origin,I am against the decision of banning Turkey from Next world Cup,but they should be punished,and also, Emre and Alpay,should be punished from playing for your national team for at least 1 year..

I don't think you need to get out of next world cup (read my previous posts,all of them) but you guys(not the whole Turkey) need to learn to how to accept defeats,and how to celebrate it, you know how many people died because of shooting guns.that why a tough punishment will learn those guys to behave better.

Trust me most of us here or In europe have nothing against you,if it was in Spain or Italy like you mentioned,maybe they couldn't recieve a decision like that,(but remember Roma's and Inter's punishment in Cl the past years ),but if it was another "smaller" country,yeah,I think they would get the same reaction from members here or Fifa.

Do not let ur pre-judgement to affect ur judgement,
being Greek doent automatically means, i hate all the Turks and ur NT team,
on the contrary i had the chance to admire ur team's fighting spirit
(smth that my NT lost after their "Champions" status),
i m really sorry about ur team's disqualification, that totaly surprised me(i even bet on ur teams win)
i understand how it feels to loose the ticket for Germany after so many efforts,
it is sad indeed, but one team sould loose the qualification,
my NT could be in the very same place,

Players coming in Turkey to play football are concerned about their safety,because there is always a threat of a riot.
I ve met some Turk "fans" and they were so proud of it,
this is a totaly wrong mentality,
football sould be a celebration of peace not a cause of a fight,
esp between two foreign countries...
Usualy most of the problems start from some groups of brainless "fans"
guided by some others hidden in the shadows,
the problem of profesional troublemakers isnt new,
most of the civilased countries have been throught this internal war and developed some countermeasures,
Greece isnt an exception to that rule,being throught similar experiances doesnt help to familiarise ur self with this situation and tolerate such brute attitude,
i personally believed if this is their football... let them have it...

i will never forgive the individuals that live to alterate the spirit of athletism,
nomatter their origins,
these malign elements are very obviusly present in Turkish football,
in uncontroled numbers,
measures sould be taken sometime by someone and if Turkey cant do it by herself FIFA sould help her...
However this problem alone isnt sufficient to ask for a ban,
because it would be unfair for the players...

what happened now is the players,
the professional football players who represent the models of their fans and sould at least now how to behave themselves atleast in the field had started a fight theselves,
this is totally UNACCEPTABLE,this is a sign that hooliganism penetrated like a cancer the soul of football,is there a worce act for a footballer, playing for his national team(not for money,just for the sport,the joy of his life),than to beat an oposition player because he has won in the field?

Fifa started the biggest disciplinary investigation in its history on Monday into the violence at the end of the Turkey-Switzerland World Cup play-off.

The second leg in Istanbul ended in chaos after the Swiss qualified for the finals on the away goals rule.

"In terms of scope it is the most voluminous disciplinary investigation in our history," said a spokesman for world football's governing body.

President Sepp Blatter has promised the inquiry will finish before 9 December.

That is when the draw for the finals in Germany next summer takes place in Leipzig.

The spokesman added that the investigation would include interviewing several of the players and officials from both countries involved in the fracas at the end of the game.

"We have begun the enquiry in Zurich today which will involve interviewing more than 20 people," he said.

"These include the two national coaches, players, officials and technical staff from both countries.

"Because of the scale of the inquiry and the possible sanctions we have to ensure that legally everything is done exactly right."

The match in Istanbul ended with tempers fraying and television footage showed Switzerland's Benjamin Huggel kicking a member of the Turkish coaching staff as he ran off the pitch.

The Swiss players left the pitch under a hail of objects thrown by the Turkish crowd and defender Stephane Grichting was taken to hospital with a groin injury following trouble in the tunnel.

The trouble in Istanbul took the shine off Switzerland's qualification for next year's World Cup.

Kobi Kuhn's team lost 4-2 to Turkey after a 2-0 victory in the first leg but won the tie on away goals.

Tuncay Sanli scored a hat-trick for the Turks, who finished third in the 2002 World Cup, but Marco Streller's 84th-minute goal put the Swiss through.
