As for defensive solidity, not sure. Empoli had 2 great chances and whenever they went on a counter in the 2nd half, we looked exposed.
It sure isn’t perfect, as soon as we started getting desperate we allowed space in behind… all in all we have 4 clean sheets in a row as it stands, compared to other aspects of our game the defense is fine, even in some of Allegri’s best days with not conceding for several games in a row there were always a couple of good chances for the opposition too…

Apart from Roma and even that is questionable, those were shit teams we faced. We will have to do far better, create a lot more against relegation battlers going forward. We are playing Napoli at home next in Serie A so this will be his 1st real test. We are usually poor after midweek games and we play PSV on Tuesday, while Napoli have a full week to prepare themselves for the match. Im not very confident we can win that one. Afterall these players need to believe into his vision of football and a loss against rival would set us back for weeks. Maybe we rise up for the occasion. Id be surprised though after the shitshow from the last 2 games. As Ive said 15 games minimum are needed to get some sense where this team will be going. There will be a lot of frustrating matches in between.

It'll take time to get us out of playing 3 seasons of dogshit football, it'll come soon enough. We have a week to learn and acclimatise, a lot were on international duty. Also, Zirkzee under Ten Hag versus Motta is a massive difference, I expect Motta to improve our players in time. Sacking Allegri for Motta was a necessity. Give him time.

I wonder how much time he needs?

Tuz usually breaks in October.

So he has 25 to 40 days max to make a wonder.

Tuttosport takes a year or two though. At least the fact media wont shit on him can be comforting for Motta.

Truth is that on the flipside of having achieved this 4 clean sheets in a row this is also the second game in a row that we actually didn’t manage to score a goal, which is somewhat worrying, however as i emphasized before much is due to having so many new players and still going through experiments with the formation, there’s still time to adapt and turn things around though.

Pep Guardiola needed one season along with infinite budget Kloop needed 2-3 seasons to make Liverpool competitive again. So this is just beginning of Mottaball we are almost there just need some understanding between the new players to start delivering victories.

I think he realized he picked the wrong starting line up a little too late. But again with all these new signings it's a trial and error process, you don't know what your players are capable of if you don't play them.

A more conservative coach wouldn't have subbed 4 players at once so that's a good sign he isn't afraid to make bold decisions.

There's not much else to say here, making these players gel will take time and we need patience.

Remember that despite the horror show of previous season (14 draws and 5 losses) we still ended up 3rd.

All is to say there’s a lot of room to fuck up and still meet objectives in this league. I just hope we see actual progress in our patterns of play as the season goes along

2 things:

this is why we doubters said it's not a good idea to leave signings very late. means more time for players to adapt and gel. these 2 draws dropping points could be diffeence between making and not making a scudetto run/CL qualification.

for a new coach with lots of new players implementing a new system why did he only play 3 pre season friendlies? minimum should have been 5

When Scudetto? When big ears? :boh:

Seriously though, he’s showed lots of promise already in the first two matches. There were always going to be setbacks here and there. No judgments until at least end of CL group stage.

We weren't using 2 DMs? Locatelli was one, and he was all alone. Litterally no one helping him centrally. Luiz was instructed to be wide left mostly or stay close to Vlaho.
Luiz made no insertions to help yildiz. Not even one. If that's his version of b2b then put mckennie imo

He was wide left mid to cover Cambiaso drifting inwards mostly. Stayed behind Yildiz just being a pass back option, not making runs or movements inwards, except short pass option. It was same the very few times he went central, was mainly static being close to Vlahovic.

Was far from a DM. In general he didn't move around enough but I'm really curious why Motta deliberately instructed him to be a pseudo left mid most of the hour he played. Extremely odd...

How do you know he “deliberately instructed” him to do that? Locatelli and Kalulu were all over the place cleaning up, maybe David Luiz just thought the pitch felt softer out wide.

Because he was standing on left mid position almost allways, especially whenever Cambiaso drifting in when we're on the ball.

Motta is right there next to him on that side lol, if it wasn't a deliberate instruction to keep that position, he would been told to move or be subbed off.

He wasn't very mobile, but it was an odd tactical task he was given. His static lazy approach to movement was more evident when he was almost an AM just staying close to Vlahovic at times.

But the left role was more or less a deliberate way to be an extra outlet for short pass, overwhelm on the left and the idea was probably switch to the right. But nothing was happening on right either.

Really odd game tactically.

We started so well in the first 2 games though, what happened?
Playing against terrible opponents.

Still too early to judge. Will take alot longer for us to play the way he wants.

Most of our big signings never had a pre seasoned with us.

The international break so early in the season is absolutely bullshit too.

We have seen some creative mids hover deep and wide left from time to time. Kroos used to do this for Real, or even Raindeers for Milan. They would start attacks wide left in a deeper spot because that is where the space is.

But it seems like Motta likes his fullbacks being inverted. Kalulu was often cleaning up in the middle of the pitch during possession, and Cambiaso was cutting inside as you said.

Empoli defends really well this season so even if Luiz played more centrally it wouldn’t have mattered. He’s not Kroos or Modric by any means. I will rely on Koop to impose himself more in matches like these. The wingers have to be way better as well.
