I thought fans were against this farce of an idea. Everyone here knows I'm an Arsenal fan, but the fact that we would be a part of this when we're currently 10th in the league and haven't been top four in 5 years is comical. It just takes the whole concept of merit out of the game. I'm not against the game evolving, but giving teams a right to be in a competition regardless of merit just doesn't make any sense to me.

Do you think Arsenal deserves less to be in CL than the winners of Andora league or third place in Russian PL?

Yeah, I think most of us support the idea of a super league but we agree that no team should be untouchable. Relegation/promotion are a part of football that should remain intact.

Hopefully Agnelli and Perez come up with a better system. They got a bit greedy.

A bit? It's totally delusional to demand a fixed place at the 'top' regardless of results, goes against the very meaning of sports/competition in general.

AA has lost it and IMO his head will be given on a plate to the public so that we can start rebuilding the tarnished image of the club. Watch all the complaints and threats to go away the moment he's sacked.

First of all there are 9 teams in England alone that deserve to be in the CL ahead of Arsenal as things stand. Second, this is a European competition. There are probably 10 teams from each of Spain, Italy and England that are better than some teams in the CL group stages, but it's a European competition. Third and finally, for as much faults UEFA has, and they are many, them being the governing body of european football makes a lot more sense than elite clubs governing the competition themselves. There is an inherent conflict of interest there. Enough rules and regulations are in favor of these top teams (see FFP) as it is.

If my team played in the BPL I wouldn't want a Super League either. The way things are going the BPL is going to be the Super League while all the other leagues become second rate, especially Serie A. Even Champions League will be secondary to the BPL.

Yeah, I get that point. In the spirit of sport, teams should be rewarded solely on sporting merit. Unfortunately that's not how it has been for a long time.

Juventus got big mostly thanks to Agnelli's patronage, inter because of Moratti. City because of their Sheikh, Chelsea Abrahamovic, etc.

While inter, Milan, Arsenal and Chelsea have not had much success lately, they are major contributors to the financial success of their leagues. This is due to the brands (I know... ... but that's reality) they have built based on their success throughout the years. And this is why they would have been among the permanent teams.

There would have still been room for other teams to join the league based on sporting performance.

If there is no incentive for teams to perform since they can't get relegated then they would just keep getting beaten and lose out on prize money and sponsorships and their "brand" would suffer. And eventually they may get ejected from the league

It was a stupid idea to have permanent teams and it's not going to happen. Get over it. If they want something to change they better start working on something with relegation/promotion based on results.

Well Henry, Bergkamp and Vieira are no longer playing for Arsenal, Xhaka, Lacazette and Aubameyang are. This current crop of players have done nothing to deserve being in this competition. Lets not kid ourselves, the only reason those teams are in it is because of Tv views, social media following; basically the ability to generate gate receipts and tv revenue. Do you really think thats the right way to do it? Because we both know that the criteria for choosing these teams has nothing to do with sporting merit.

Otherwise Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Leeds have much bigger histories than the likes of City and Chelsea, domestically and regionally. So why aren't they in, if the issue is whether we should take last year or last century.

Fair enough. I personally think the criteria should be the (projected/approximate) number of fans globally.

Apparently (according to my local sport site), they claim that Putin put pressure on Abramovic, because Gazprom is CL sponsor and EURO is in Sankt Petersburg.

They also claim Saudis were financially backing it, so City's sheikh stepped out (why was he there in the 1st place then?) and PSG didn't want to be part. Perez is on good terms with Saudis (his firm does some construction projects there) and brought them in to the SL. This all is what I read on my local site, then I went to Sueddeutsche to double check and I need subscription
