I get all the people wanting this if it indeed replaces the CL. If the clubs were hurting and not getting enough while the federation swims in money then I hope it goes through.

Besides Football has been all about money for many decades, it's nothing new. And it's not like International football still really matter as much.

But here's what I'm having a really hard time to accept; guaranteed spots. It rewards incompetence. Clubs earning big time money even if they're badly run. No demotion, no real risks and again nothing will feel like it's earned.

The only reason ESL games were set to be played in the middle of the week is that all ESL teams intend to participate in national leagues. If UEFA do ban them and if the clubs abide this decision, ESL participants won't have any reason to stick to midweek. And it makes situation even more spicy.

ESL will surely move their games to weekends. Also, they will surely spread all of those top games throughout the weekends. It will give them more money from TV contracts and sponsorship deals. And it will destroy all the national leagues because we all know what games most fans will prefer.

With financial backing ESL have, they will easily maintain such a siege for years. UEFA won't endure even two seasons, because unlike ESL consisting of 20 teams max, UEFA will have to financially support tens of leagues and hundreds of clubs. It would be impossible in their golden years, it's beyond impossible in this economy.

So, UEFA are either bluffing (best case scenario for them) or they're not seeing clearly the entire matrix of options ESL have to respond with.

For sure. I would actually love to see like a couple Friday evening matches, then different matches scattered about on Saturday and Sunday. It would be quite a weekend... each weekend.

Perhaps a European premier league system of 25 teams in the 1st division and 25 in the second division with relegation systems etc.

Problem with UEFA is that they generate over US$3bln in revenue and the prize money as a percentage of revenue is very small. Clearly very inefficient.

Depends on how they organize it. Set up a full-scale youth/development league of b teams and perhaps not. That becomes a pretty high quality league on its own and teams start being able to develop their own youngsters with more ease and focus.

Agreed, I'd make it on all levels, from U15 to U23. When we travel to Madrid, you take all the youth teams with you, and they play a competitive league on their own. They play earlier that day before the main game in the evening. Then 'reward' the best performing ones by putting them in the A team for the main game. I think it can work out great

It goes against the history of football, but that recent history has led us here. To a completely corrupt and broken system.

But I don’t see it in North American sports. I’d take the NHL and NFL as the best examples of it. Especially because the draft is far less certain than the NBA and a single player can’t change fortune of a franchise to the same degree. Both those leagues are closed, yet extremely competitive (far more so than European top flight and CL football). Rarely are teams uncompetitive for long periods of time and between the draft and free agency, salary cap, and salary floor, different teams are always rising to contend at the top. You don’t get your club finances destroyed just because you had a bad couple years. As I said before, in the past 10 years, 14 of 31 teams in the NHL have made the Stanley cup finals. 7 different winners. Every single NHL team has been in the playoffs in the past 10 seasons. 12 of 32 NFL teams have played in the super bowl in the past 10 years. 8 different winners. 31 of 32 have been in the playoffs.

Maybe there is a way to appease the big clubs and make a system that allows small clubs to actually be competitive like that, while keeping relegation/promotion system intact, but I don’t really see it.

There's nothing wrong with the way it is now imo, coefficient and everything. The issue the big clubs have is that UEFA gets to keep a bigger piece of the pie than they should (agreed there), and that lower teams like Atalanta can knock Juve out of it. Same with Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal. Looks like all four were gonna miss next year because of West Ham and Leicester City.

1st you need to take the competition away from governing bodies like UEFA, clubs should run it themselves. Other than that current system looks decent. But I would still make changes:
-domestic leagues should be smaller, less games, creating room for more international games. Say, a 14 team, 26 round system in the top 5 leagues. Also eliminate league cups, pointless. And reduce domestic cup competition so the top league clubs play up to 5-6 games if they reach the final (no repetition games, that's stupid @FA)
-more international games, so make the group stages with more teams. Or make it one league/2 groups with many teams rather, where everyone plays everyone. Then start the 2nd phase from a QF.
-additional rule I'd introduce is qualification to european cups through a 3-5 year period. So you don't get to qualify after a fluke good season, or benefit from a fluke bad season from a top club. You need to consistently do well over a longer period to get into a euro cup. I'd personally make it more even, so more champions and less 2nd, 3rd placed teams enter into a CL, but that's impossible now with how much money those richest teams generate
-reduce NT games. No one needs pointless friendlies between Norway and Mongolia in March, when Dortmund plays a CL QF right after and risk losing their starting CF. Also reduce qualifications. You don't need to play Vatikan or San Marino twice in a qualification round. Reduce the groups by eliminating those garbage teams before in a knock out pre-qualification. Make the actual qualifications with 3-4 team groups. Make the Euro 16 teams max. Make the world cup 32 teams max. Remove nations league and confed cup.
