Ahhh... another Summer Olympics over. Congratulations to Greece for surprising many of the skeptics and putting on great games this year. Maybe not as great as Sydney's in 2000, but great nonetheless. They pretty much showed everyone that they were deserving and capable.
Meanwhile, I am currently laying bets with friends for what cultural "WTF?!?!" the Chinese NOC organizers will pull at Beijing 2008. Any takers?
Let me explain. China has long had an international inferiority complex (and some of that is quite understandable), and it's quite clear that many in China's Olympic organizing committee see this as the international stage to address that. When I was in Beijing in 2001, the 2008 campaign was spread on incredibly thick, and it was clear what the 2008 games meant in that regard.
But given past efforts that were completely lost in cultural translation (e.g., the Beijing 2000's unsuccessful Olympic committee bid that included, and I'm not making this up, a plan to eradicate all houseflies from Beijing by the 2000 games), I swear we're bound to see some earnest gesture that will leave the world scratching its head to understand. Kind of like the Christmas presents my older brother buys ("A snake catcher ... gee, that's what I always wanted.").
Given that 2008 is Year of the Rat, my money so far is on the Chinese Olympic Committee making the gesture of providing a live rat in each athlete's dorm of the Olympic Village. But there have to be better ones out there... :dazed:
