Del Piero is a great man. A better man...a different species...he exudes virtue, as a man. Yet at times, especially this last season, I have seen too many Juve games in which he has done little to nothing in regards to threatening the opposition. He has lost more pace this last season than at any time before, age is catching up with his body. He also seems weaker, physically, than I have ever seen him before. He can still beat a player, but unless he is close to goal, that player generally has a chance to take a second swipe for the ball after chasing him down. GONE is the Sandro who would cut in from the left, slipping between defenders, put the ball on his right boot then curl it into the top corner...He has lost much of his dynamic nature on the pitch.

As a man, as I have said, Del Piero is a King compared with Cassano as a nasty, petulant jester. On the pitch, in history, Del Piero;s career is like comparing a Saint to a stupid tramp. But in the NOW...indeed, I think Cassano is more of a consistent danger to opposition defences. I also think its a shame that Ranieri has not given Giovinco more opportunities in Sandro's position, rather than deployed wide left.

I love Sandro. He will forever remain for me and the rest of the Juve supporters a legend. But I am scrutinizing components of a team which wins games. Not humility, or decency. They don't win you games...This is a problem which extends to the coach, for me...I like Ranieri, as a man. He comports himself impeccably, makes the odd strange, amusing, yet inoffensive comment, like his recent reference to chinese referees, and has never led me to believe there is a nasty streak lying beneath his cool, often jovial surface...Yet, his teeth lack sharpness. He dines with good grace, good table manners, but I have a preference doe including some elements in a team, which rip into their meals like Atilla the Hun, focused more on the Eating than the Show of Eating.

Its why I smile at the suggestion of Cassano coming to Turin. Its why I smile when people tell me that Italy didn't deserve to win the world cup, only gaining the trophy through disgraceful behaviour by Matterazzi...Maybe they have a point, but the fact is, Matterazzi helped us win the final. And I wonder how many italians feel so strongly about him calling Zidane;s mother a whore, or whatever is was that he said to inspire such a strong reaction, that they would prefer to have finished second and not grabbed the Winners Status....

Its like Maradona's Hand of God...he doesn't regret that, and neither to the Argies...I am british sicillian, yet I hold no grudge against Diego.

We lack that kind of character at Juve, with only Chiellini coming close...Zebina will add some spice to proceedings, but lacks talent as a footballer.

I take my hat of to Sandro, for a beautiful, glorious, loyal career, but his stellar light is fast fading...
You guys tell me. Does this sound right? Especially "the Sandro" bothers me.

Yes a person can be a Juve fan and call him Sandro. He could be called Miss Fairy Shoed Alessandra for all i care.

Your logic is silly to say the least.
A Juventus fan should have the most basic form of respect towards his captain and that is knowing his name.

His name is Alessandro Del Piero.

If that was being twisted to Alessandro Del Totti, then perhaps you could argue. But judging a peron's support to the club on the basis of what nickname someone used for him,is irrational.

No, it's not. A few examples:

A Liverpool fan knows it's Stevie.
A Juventus fan knows it's Ale.
A Sampdoria fan knows it sometimes is Fantantonio.

You cannot call Stevie Steve-o.
You cannot call Ale Sandro.
You cannot call Fantantonio Totò.

And what do you mean PERHAPS then I could argue? Dear god, if someone would call him Del Totti I wouldn't argue at all with the guy. I'd kill him.

Imagine someone calling Allah Ballah. It took me 5 minutes to figure out he was talking about Del Piero and another 5 to figure out if he was being serious.

I know that a lot of Alessandros are called Sandro. Nesta for example is often called Sandro. However even in Italy most are called Ale, not Sandro. Furthermore Del Piero has stated time and time again that he likes to be called Ale. He does not like Alex either, but Sandro was never even in the picture. Not a single newspaper calls him Sandro, not one colleague calls him Sandro and not one juventino in the crowd tomorrow night will be thinking of him as Sandro. The fact that you don't seem to know how people generally shorten his name is remarkable to say the least and indicates that you don't follow Juventus.. at all.

It has been Alex or Ale Del Piero for 13 years. If you don't know it by now, you're one awful fan. I'm not sure what your last phrase means, but I find it quite obvious that he would indeed react with suitable disgust. After he figures out that you're talking to him that is.

SANDRO FFS! You called him Sandro! What the fuck..
You cannot be a Juventus fan and call Del Piero Sandro. It's just not right. I mean, God, just how little does he know about Juve?

So who's setting the criteria for who a good fan is and who an awful fan is. Like Salman said, your logic is irrational, and quite frankly i'd like to add that its a waste of space in a thread where real football discussion was going on.

He's calling Ale Sandro. Do none of you find it odd that he does not know which shortened version we use to speak of our CAPTAIN? It's like a Liverpool fan calling Gerrard Steve-o.
 that is kinda true, good comparison

Knowing the name of your captain is not irrelevant. Knowing which shortened version to use is important as well. It is common for Italians to shorten a name, but they will always be consistent. An Ale is an Ale and a Sandro a Sandro. You don't change. Cassano can't be called Totò, because that's Di Natale. Del Piero has been Ale for years now, you cannot simply call him Sandro. He'll never never know you're talking to him if you adress him like that. And yes, this is a criterion for being a good fan. Generally I don't set criteria, but knowing the names of the players, knowing the name of your CAPTAIN FFS and not supporting other teams are vital factors.

Not to mention that it's a matter of respect as well.

Can you please tell me where to get the rest of the criterion for being a good fan?

On a more serious note, it really doesn't matter actually. I'm sure he's aware that DP is nicknamed Ale and Alex much more than Sandro, but it probably doesn't make a difference for him. He can call him whatever the fuck he wants to call him, gods sake this is a forum where people call Secco "SUCKO", Ranieri RUINeri and Blanc BLANK.

Fine. Imagine him sitting in the Olimpico watching the game. Suddenly he shouts out: pass it to Sandro, pass it to Sandro!

Do you have any idea of how the people around him would react?
