Larry Bird: "Which one of you niggas is gonna finish 2nd (in the 3-pt shootout)?"

Imagine the mentally-soft bitch that LeBron is having to deal with Bird back in the days

Hahaha I laughed hard when I was watching skip Bayless tell that story yesterday, but I don't believe it lol. Bird was straight up hard ass shit talker, but why would that be revealed 30 years later by someone who wasn't even there? Sounds embellished.

But yeah seen few documentaries on him and he and his team was straight savages, they would make today players cry, when Draymond is today's standard of bad boy.

It's completely legit - I had heard that story about Bird before, that story is legendary, actually. I just wasn't aware he actually called them 'nig**rs' - that was the only new part for me in Bayless' story.

Here you can even see Craig Hodges himself, the guy who came in 2nd place in 1986, tell that story (without the n-word part):

I know the story is legit, I mean the nigga part ofcourse, that part is told to Skip allegedly by someone who wasnt even in the room. I mean bunch of guys and officials, and story been told many times, and 30 years later you only find out the nigga punchline? Seems convenient way to make a funny story even more lolsy. But yeah Larry was straight gtfo my face unless you can back it up type of deal, straight hood trolling all his opponents lol.

NBA was so different then where you could troll someone so hard they punch you out end of game, Julius Irving

I wish a lot of you guys were around to see Bird and Magic in their primes. I mean, it was Ali-Frazier at least twice a year, not counting the playoffs and all-star game.

When I watch all of those documentaries, and they show all of that footage, I don't just remember the games, but I remember where I was, what time it was, what I was eating, etc......

I also remember dreading going to school the next day when the Lakers lost.

It's not that farfetched at all, tbh. Today, it would get out immediately and people would be all over Bird.
One has to keep in mind, however, that was 30+ years ago - very different times, different mindsets, when the n-word wasn't as heavily policed against as it is today. There was no social media back then, so who is gonna substantiate it but the guys in the locker-room, who themselves wouldn't have wanted to seem soft and bitchy, if they had complained.
It's entirely plausible that people just dropped that n-word part in retelling the story over the years given how political correctness has become an integral part of social behavior in the 21st century, or at least much more so than it was in the 80s.

I dont mean its not plausible he said it, he wouldnt said it with malice and he litterally SHIT ON EVERYONE in the league if they challenged him :D But I question why that would come out 30 years later and not sooner, thats all.

Hearing about how he used to talk shit to coaches is most hilarious of all. I mean the guy used to say to coaches he felt disrespected any time a white player was guarding him

I envy you, I was just born in middle of that decade, only have my fathers words to go by (HUGE HUGE Jordan fan) besides clips. But besides great athletes, I like strong unique characters, and Bird sounds straight up hilarious (Jordan was savage too, but in a more insanely competively asshole way lol).

"Never forget the time against the pistons when Larry Bird caught the ball on the wing and nobody was on him and he yelled "Who's guarding me?!" Isiah Thomas ran and closed him out, but Larry shot the 3 right in his face, drained it, and said "awww, too late!""

Celtics are going to need to do a sign and trade with Utah in order to fit the max contract under the cap.

Which is usually what happens in these circumstances with Max contracts.

KD was an exception because he didn't sign for the max last year, so OKC got nothing. Nada. Niente. Which is more than that cowbell town deserved anyway.

I'm not sure how Olynyk fits in that lineup with Whiteside and Adebayo.

Oh well.

In other news the knicks sign Hardaway to a 4 yr/ 71 million offer sheet. If the Hawks don't match that, they could very well end up being the worst team in the league.

Bird would have given him fits. I'm not sure if you are underestimating Bird.
Maybe, i am not underestimating Bird, it's just that Lebron is on another level on all aspects of the game besides shooting.

Lebron numbers are crazy good, except in one series against Dallas in 2011.

Let's not forget that Larry Bird played with 3 great players in the same team.

You are underestimating Bird. Severely underestimating him. Bird was a better rebounder and clutch player than Lebron.

- - - Updated - - -

And I won't even gt into the hustle and sheer will to throw caution to the wind for every lose ball. This guy literally wiped out scoring tables going after loose balls

- - - Updated - - -

And this whole "Well, Bird played with 3 stars" argument.

Let's take into consideration that though this is the case, that argument also supports Bird's greatness due to there being fewer teams, and all teams having more talent, leading to much more competition. Take a look at some of the worst teams during that era, and then look at some of the players on those teams. You will see what I mean

Nah, i'am not underestimating Bird, think you are the one who underestimating Lebron ( whom i am not the biggest fan ).
The things that Lebron has been doing since he was 18 is out of this world.
Larry was clutch, trash talker, a winner ( he played with a 2/3 hall of famers ) but Lebron is a much better player. Only MJ has a case over him only because of the rings.

looks like Dereck Rose is on his way out and Knicks are looking for a new PG if this works out
