I don't think they can fit Davis, Hayward and Horford under the cap. If they are looking to get Davis, in addition to Hayward, they'd have to dump Horford.
Also, I think the Cs may be thinking that IT sort of puts a ceiling on how far they go in the play-offs - nice player to have but lack of size and defense may be too much come real crunch time. Plus, IT's still on on the cheap but that will change within a year.
I always thought a package of IT + Horford + a pick would be the best way to go after someone like Davis.

They can get there. They would have to renounce some of their players, but it can get done. Including Brown in a deal is almost 5 million. THey have a lot of players that they can renounce the rights to, such as Amir Johnson and Olynyk

But then there is the IT situation - Cs get at most a year with him on a small deal, assuming he doesn't ask for an extension this coming season. Even if they were to somehow make it work this year, next year they will be facing an even bigger challenge to fit IT under the cap too.
And he is still an undersized player, who's a liability on D in the playoffs.

In the long run, I think Cs will be better served if they moved IT now and kept this years pick, instead.
If they could somehow get Davis for IT+Horford+say Lakers pick in 2018, they could get Fox or Jackson this year and even entertain the option of trading Nets 2018 pick for someone like Butler (maybe the pick in a package with Brown).
Davis and Butler's deals were before TV rights deal, so they won't have trouble fitting them under the cap.

In such a scenario, Cs would have Davis, Hayward, Butler (or another star player) and Fox/Jackson + a solid bench.
That or Davis, Hayward, Horford, and IT likely just for 2017-18 season ...
I'd take the former option not just from a talent standpoint but also from a long-term cap perspective - it would require fitting 3 big contracts under the cap, as opposed to 4, which would deplete the depth/bench on the roster.

I obviously hate the Celtics with a passion, but I'm such a fan of Brad Stevens.

Lakers are out of the running for the #1 pick. From what I heard, the Celtics wanted #2, a 1st rd pick in 2020, Brandon Ingram, and Ivica Zubac.

They are still in play with Phoenix and Sacramento, however

If Butler is an addition to say Davis and Hayward, yes, but Butler and Hayward alongside IT? I don't see it.
For me, Cs need to make the tough decision and part ways with IT to have a chance at being really, really good.

That sounds like way too much for trading down from 1 to 2. Maybe Lakers twitter is trying to justify not jumping up for Fultz.
From the sound of it, 76ers and Cs are in very advanced talks and if the Cs really wanted such a huge return from the Lakers, they'd be looking for even more from the 76ers. I doubt the 6ers would even consider giving up multiple young players on top of future 1st.
If Cs valued Fultz that much, they probably wouldn't even be talking trades now.

The problem with the requested package being so steep is that because the Lakers can't trade a pick until 2020, that value is certainly less than a more recent draft pick

With Paul George basically a done dealio for next summer at this point (i think its safe to assume), i dont see much reason for drafting Josh Jackson tbh. I assume we would play PG at the 2 and Ingram at the 3, so hed be coming off the bench if we get him. In that case, getting a point guard and trading Russell would make the most sense

NBA Trade Rumors: Rival general managers leaked that the Lakers are trying to trade D’Angelo Russell for a first-rounder

The NBA Draft is a time of smoke and mirrors as everyone talks to everyone about everyone’s intentions but their own.

This can be done when general managers want to bad mouth a player anonymously to get them to drop to them in the draft, or to potentially drive down the value around the league of a player they want by leaking that they’re available for pennies and killing that player’s team’s leverage in talks with other organizations.

That’s not necessarily what’s happening in the case of the rumors the Lakers might trade D’Angelo Russell for a top-12 pick, but that leak certainly didn’t come from the Lakers.

Chad Ford of ESPN — who reported Russell was on the block — went on the radio with Allen Sliwa of ESPN 710 and confirmed that he didn’t get his information about Russell’s availability from the Lakers themselves.

Instead, Ford said he was told by other organizations who claimed the Lakers had called them and offered Russell to try and acquire a pick they could use to select a player in the first round who they had brought in for a workout but was out of their range at No. 2 or No. 28 (via ESPN):

"Calling around to other teams around the league, it sounds like the prospect that [the Lakers] are dangling is to get a pick in that range is D'Angelo Russell. I don't think that they have any deal, or necessarily that they'll pull the trigger, but that's been the exploratory guy that they're looking at to see whether they can get a pick in the right sort of range.

“And again, it's not like there's a done deal with any of those teams or what have you, but they've started that process. Part of that is the due diligence of trying to figure out if they can get another pick in this draft, but that's how they've gotten those players in... It sounds to me from talking to several rival general managers in that range that it's been Russell that's been discussed.”

There is a lot to unpack here, but the most important thing is that this didn’t come from the Lakers. That doesn’t mean the rumor is necessarily untrue, but it does mean there’s at least a chance that these other general managers are trying to drive Russell’s league-wide value down with this leak, making other team’s feel like they didn’t have to offer much for him if all the Lakers wanted was a pick in the top-12.

The Lakers could actually be offering Russell to teams, or they could be trying to gauge his value, or they could be trying to see what it would cost to get another pick in the top-12. None of those things necessarily mean they’re trading him.

Ford also says that the Lakers don’t currently have a trade on the table and might not even pull the trigger. Until either of those things changes, Russell’s status isn’t really something to panic about.

i honestly dont see a future here for him with a PG joining in this draft and us getting George in 2018. its gonna be Ball/Fox-George-Ingram so the best bet for him would be coming off the bench. having said that, wouldnt mind keeping him for a year and then trading him either. but i think he will be gone soon

So, who is going to be your shooting guard? We can't just assume that George is automatic for next year. What if the Cavs trade for him, they win a title, and he decides that he wants to stay in Cleveland? We can't be making trades based on assumptions

i think if George is coming here that Magic already knows it. would be stupid if he trades Russell without knowing in advance what the core of the team would look like in a year. and id put George at the 2 as i would not be moving Ingram from the 3
