Update - Lebanon aid pledges top $7.6 billion at Paris III

Thursday, 25 January, 2007 @ 5:08 PM

Beirut & Paris - Lebanon won more than $7.6 billion on Thursday to help it cope with a debt mountain and recover from war -- and, some donors hope, to help its democratically elected government weather a growing threat from pro-Syrian Hezbollah-led opponents.

Saudi Arabia headed the list of donors with a promise of $1.1 billion of development aid and grants, the United States pledged $770 million and the Arab Monetary Fund and World Bank offered funding of around $700 million apiece.

"The total sum collected for Lebanon amounts to a little more than $7.6 billion," French President Jacques Chirac told the conference after around 40 countries and organizations outlined their funding plans at the one-day meeting.

"I'm overjoyed by this," he added to loud applause.

Lebanon is still struggling to rebuild after its 1975-1990 civil war and is weighed down by $40 billion of debt, equal to 180 percent of gross domestic product.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a Lebanese, I'd like to thank each country that stood beside Lebanon in Paris3. Lot of thanks to the United States, King Abdullah(Saudi), President Jack Chirac, Italy, lot of Arab countries, Germany, Spain...etc

And special thanks to one of the greatest hero's in Lebanon's history, THANK YOU PRESIDENT RAFIK HARIRI :touched::touched:....You were missed today! RIP.

Unfortunately snoop, Hezbolla doesn't want the "International Trial" to take place. This regime is such a terror.

Jumblat was spot on when he said "Hafez Al Assad was a murder but much more in civilized way, Bashar Al Assad is a retard murder" He should follow his father soon. Or else middle-east will never be in peace.

Who else thinks that this conference's main target was to support one side against the others??

If those donors waited for 17 years, why is it urgent to make it now??

Yes, because 7,6 billion dollar will all go into Sanyoura's pocket:rolleyes:.

When Hezbollah will decide to put their hands with the gov and decide that the country is before Syria and Iran book, then you'll get to know where all these money are heading to. Until then, I hope/wish the gov to spend the money on their own without Hezbollah and 8march being part of It.

Anyway, seems like Manar Tv is doing pretty good job. I'm sure If Nasrallah would praise Paris 3 tonight, I'll see you praising it aswell.

Like Sanyoura said, Hassan Nasrallah knows who President Sanyoura is. Believe me Sanyoura will not give up to the critics and bashing that he's recieving, Rafik Hariri(bless his soul) tought us a lesson. We've all seen what Manar media did accuse President Hariri.

Sanyoura is pretty smart man not to give our gov to Syria and Iran. It belongs to us, Lebanese!

There March14 snipers on the rooftops aiming at innocent civilians. And I'm not talking about what I read or heard...it's what we saw ON TV.
Check your facts and re-watch the news, 2 were arrested last night, today It was confirmed on both LBC and NBN, one of them is syrian the other is palestinian who were using snipers on the rooftops.

These kind of accusations can put the country behind and not forward.

    So far there isn't.

    Sorry to disappoint you.
    It's not about me...

I hate the idea of denying that there are LEBANESE people who want the war to resume...

Some Palestinians & syrians may take part in that, but the main players in the Lebanese grounds are Lebanese. NO??

Why are you changing the topic? Yes the main trouble-makers on the grounds are Lebanese, who is denying that?

We're talking about the Snipers thing, there were two arrested, non of them was Lebanese.

The Army has been arresting lot of trouble-makers, from Aoun supporters to FM supporters, Hezbollah, LF, Marada etc... I'm sure they wont hesitate to catch any Lebanese sniper.

All I'm saying is that so far two were arrested and they're non Lebanese.
