I'm just curious - do you see ex-Soviet countries such as Lithuania as Western countries or not? Because that opinion sounded pretty Lithuanian to me, I doubt that such 'Western view' even exists on matters so small as the occupation of Lithuania.

the number of achievements of USSR is beyond of any country that existed before, what the hell you are talking about? not much good to say Of course in communists countries there are a lot of problems with freedom of speech and so on, nobody said anything otherwise, but like i said before there are pros and cons, USSR wasn't North Korea, not even close, people lived in peace, everybody had everything what they needed, no inflation, poverty does not existed, can you imagine it? no poverty, because almost everyone had a job because right after the university/college they gave you a job of ur profession, what more can u ask after your graduation? and education was free, key moment, you would move in any city of USSR and study at the any university fo free lol, but no USSR period was horrible for baltic countries On the other hand, look on the USA aka land of freedom now - the debt of students has surpassed 1trillion of dollars, how the hell poor students could pay it back? lol, freedom, well
No loans, no credits, no banks - government could gave you car, home, vacation at the resort and so on just because you was hardworker, but you'll never hear about it in ur country, they will tell you only shit about gulags, sentenced anti-commies people and so on, stupid cliches, oh and of course absolutely free medicine, absolutely

i'll go with the cons in Soviet Latvia
the architecture was a crime against humanity;
the culture of Latvia was diminished and within another fifty years would've probably been destroyed;
the intelligent part of society - writers, politicians, scientists etc. - in big numbers were sent to Siberia;
bunch of mountain people from urals where sent in their place to work in factories, can you take them back please?;
the literature was censored, the most highly held poets and writers where the ones praising red star and father lenin;
your status in communist party meant everything in everywhere, being successful meant that you're either a communist or you are forced to lie;
access to different kinds of food, cars or music or anything, especially if it's not made in Soviet Union, was non-existant or very restricted to most;

I gotta compliment your english though, it's way better than the Latvian or English of the average Russian in Latvia, who has been living here his whole life, rare to meet a Russian person capable of learning another language

Similar stuff in lithuania, just that not a lot of imported russians, lithuania was known as a bad place for them at that time. That's why Estonia and Latvia has close or even more than 50% and we have very little of russians here.

1. most of those buildings are atrocious, besides not one of them is in Latvia. cmon man, that's terrible architecture, you really like those buildings?

3. the deportation of 15 thousand latvians in 1941. June, the deportation of 44 thousand latvians in 1949. march, together in those two dates it's a bit more than 3% of the country sent to Siberia, it's not bullshit man
4. before wwii there were eight percents russians living in latvia, when soviet union collapsed it was 34 percent and about seven percent from belarus and ukraine, of course they haven't assimilated if they are almost half the population
