The thing is though, Real never got as much back as they invested. Let's face it, they gave us a team and got one player in return. Zidane was great for them and most probably pivotal in their succes, however it was never going to be considered an awesome deal.
except shit loads of revenue from shirt sales and other merchandise :faq1:

What Zidane did in that final, in my opinion, is worth 53 million pounds alone.

It doesn't exactly matter if the transfer was an awesome deal because Real obtained what they wanted... another Champions League title. And as Jem stated above, Zidane's wonderstrike in that final was worth millions and millions of pounds. Now throw in the shirt sales and other revenue from having the best player in the world on your team, then I'm fairly certain Real were happy with the deal.

People like to hate on Zidane and Real, but the former has been the best player without question since Maradona and unfortunately we know how successful the latter happens to be. They got what they wanted, we almost got what we wanted if things played out differently in 2003.

If my memory serves correct since 2002 Real's record in CL is
2003: Runners Up
Hey, that's our title. :(

So yes, in terms of European record, Real has definetely been better. But I think we are conflating two issues here: (1) How you get players and (2) How you set out your transfer policy.

Personally, I think Real's success during early stage of the above period was largely due to the foundation built buy Lorenzo Sanz, as their European success during his tenure was far more notable. Since a waste of sperm Perez took over, marketing has taken a priority over sporting success, and if buying big players for the sake of it, well I don't think we should follow Madrid. Then again, I understand your point. A well thought out transfer, which incorporates big names, is the best ones, and there is no reason why you can't be good at getting players as well as finding out which players to get. I believe Moggi was on the process of doing exactly that, bar for all that travesty we experienced last year. Real pitty, because I think we could have won a CL last year, considering how things panned out.
The foundation was indeed built by Sanz, but I don't think anybody can question what Zidane did for Real. Their transfer policies were of course inane and buying big name players just for the hell of it is something I never want to see Juventus persue. However, you're right regarding the way Real makes full-fledged assaults on the transfer market, as in my opinion it's also an intimidation factor. Real has the power and money to wheel deal with anybody. Unfortunately, Juventus has neither the power nor directors to do that right now.

Hence one of the reasons we might lose out on Milito. Sadly to say, if Moggi wanted Milito we would probably have him already.

I don't think you have a clue how much of an icon Buffon is and how Nedved is admired all over the world.
that has nothing to do with the fact that Zidane was great for Real Madrid. Both Real and Juventus got what they wanted out of the deal. And I wouldn't have had it any other way. I just think it's wrong to say that we "outsmarted" them or anything like that. They knew what they were doing, did Real. But so did we :touched:

Yeah, that's what I meant, whether Real bought the right players is a different matter entirely. But they bought the players they wanted to buy. Juve doesn't have Champion's League this upcoming season, but surely we're still a big club and if ever there's a time to spend some money, it's now. Secco & co. need to be able to throw their weight around when the situation is critical, that's all. Else we'll end up handling transfers like Manchester United.

And if we can't get Milito, I'd go for Pepe and Barzagli.

He hasn't signed yet. He seemed already ours, but now Real Merda joined the race. But I've read that he prefers Juve over Real. Zaragoza is now asking for too much after Real want him too: 25 m €.
