Maybe similar formation but completely different tactics, intensity, instructions… although i agree it’s also a physical and mental issue.

I don’t see him doing his best neither as part of the trident upfront nor as part of the two CM/CDM’s pair we will use, maybe can do ok there but will only continue to regress and surely won’t secure himself a starting spot.

Think he might get close to his best as being the third CM of a 3 man midfield, either as b2b or maybe playing in a slightly more advanced role than the other two midfielders, but even then i doubt it, because i don’t see who he will bench, which was my main point.
Why though? He has been mostly playing as CDM in Alkmaar and at the begging of his Atalanta journey, he was moved closer to the goal lately, but he was mainly CDM in his career.
Having that in mind, one thing has to change, no matter where he is playing. He has to stay focused, has to move and think faster and he has to stop making silly mistakes. If he wont do that he shouldnt be playing at all.

Thing is that most hype around him started after he was moved in a more advanced role, which is where he made the biggest impact via goals plus assists and overall contribution… and was the actual reason we purchased him, we didn’t buy a CDM for €60M, he was supposed to bring us much needed goals and assists from midfield.

And once again my main point is that i don’t see who’s starting spot he can win over by just doing the basics, and for him to regain his mental and physical shape he’ll need to start games to build back his confidence, which as i previously described will be difficult in our current setup, at this moment he is just a struggling luxury backup.

Anyway, we’ll see how it pans out, but if i were to choose i’d rather cash in now before his value plummets even more.

I have the same issue, but hopefully he suprises us lol.
I can see us putting one winger for the wingback position when we play with him in a trident attack and he could play more in midfield then, but lets see how it really works. For this to happen he has to get his shit together first, because right now Mirretti is a better option than him.
