This is not some generational talent to mortgage your entire mercato on, let alone make him the central piece of your team. This is a 26 yo Dutch guy who had the season of his life in Atlanta of all places.
There is zero coherent argument to do any of the things we are doing to get this guy.

To be honest, he's been performing for Atalanta for the last three years. He's just getting better with every season.

When you look at the amount of money the big teams are investing in upgrading their midfield, it's only natural that JJ make significant investment in a department which has been horrendous for years.

With Douglas Luiz, Koopmeiners, Thuram, Fagioli and Locatelli, you instantly have some of the best midfield talent in the league.

Bayern spent nearly €60M on a 29 year old Palhinha who played for Fulham. Union spent €70M on a then 30 year old seemingly finished Casemiro just about a year ago. They're trying to sign Ugarte who is expected to cost 70M+ minimum. Madrid have invested nearly €200M between Bellingham and Tchouameni. Gone are the days where €50-€60M gets you an elite CM.

Folks suggesting using that money to buy the likes of Nico Williams(like as if its that's easy) are being super delusional.

I would be surprised if we're going anywhere above 50M for this guy.

He's not a one-season wonder like you're trying to picture him. He's been doing it for years now and 4,5 mil/season is us not breaking a sweat in the long run.

Personally, I couldn't care less about thing signing. I do think he's a very good player and would improve us, however if it means sacrificing Soule and Chiesa for him then I think overall we have a weaker team. In the end I think he's just out of our budget

We had 4 WC midfielders (MVPP) and had Vucinic - Giovinco starting, we had Dybi, Higuain and CR7 while we had Matuidi and Ramsey supporting them. Most likely we'll have a proper midfield but no elite wingers upcoming season, I’ve seen this before
