Shiites dont celebrate but rather mourn the death of hussain. Whereas the traditional outlook of it is more of a celebratory one i would think.
I know it is mourning, I never said celebrate. And I don't really like the way they mourn, especially in certain places in Lebanon.

By the way, can you or Rami briefly tell me the history of Al-Hussain's death. And what does Al-Hasan have to do with all this? Pardon my ignorance but I've always heard of Al-Hasan w Al-Hussain.

Again I dont wanna bash shiites or turn this into a shiite-sunni debate. But Shiites mixed up and changed a lot of aspects of Islam which is totally unacceptable by the majority. I am sure that Altair knows what I am talking about...

Same as reenactments of crucifixion done in south america , shiites actually mourn and ask forgivenance because his supporters in Kufa(modern shiites) had abondoned him. It's actually quite metaphysical for a flagellant act.

Al-Hassan and Al-Hussain Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Talib, thier father is the fourth Caliph and the prophets cousin. Their mother is Fatima Al-Zahraa, the prophets daughter. They are the only descendants of the prophet and have descendants that live amongst us up to this day. After Othman Ibn Affan was murdered, Ali was voted as Caliph in Meddinah, But Moawiah in Syria also declared himself a Caliph. Which caused a Fitna between Muslims. The Islamic Empire lived in upheavel for a good 10 years or so. When Ali was killed in a battle against Moawia. Al-Hussain declared himself as Caliph also and got into a battles with Moawia. Which sadly ended Al-Hussain death in Karbalaa.

you know there are flagellants in christianity too, most notable actually with whips and all.

Those I actually have trouble collecting info on are Druze, are you familiar with their hermetic practices?
Ya kinda like what the "Da Vinci Code" described. Might be far from the truth but I think the idea is there.

About the Druze I think I could help you, I have a book about these different sects...what do you wanna know??

Correct...thanks for the head up. TBH that era is still fuzzy in my head. Since it was a "fitna" or upheavel phaze, there are a lot of different sources and stories from the sunnis and shiite that makes it kinda vague for me. School history didnt help much, where it was more of a taboo. Which I also understand.

In Pakistan it's broadcasted on Nat'l TV. My grandmother likes to watch it, out of curiousity though.
It used to be broadcasted on national TV in Lebanon, nowadays only one station does that. It is a private station, howefer all other channels show what happened in the news.

By the way, do they only cut open their forehead in Pakistan?
A few years back I saw a group used a thick metal chain to hit their back with in the parade.

I have Druze friends and at one period of time we lived in a Druze area in Lebanon. One knows nothing about their practices, even the ones who are Druze, to know about what they do and their rituals they have to go to a certain education and will after that have to dress their "sherwal" and "alloose" for the men and the white "7ijab" with the long black dress for the females.

I haven't seen one myself, but I know that they don't hold back :p

In the pictures I've seen, they use chains, steel wires, etc. I'm not entirely sure, but I think Pakistan has the 3rd largest Shia population after Iran and Iraq.
