Cannavaro:

“The three-man defence has become fashionable because there are now fewer good defenders in one-on-one situations. As a result, Coaches are looking to beef up that department."

He's probably right, particularly when you also factor in how few fullbacks there are just now who know how to defend.

I think it's not the reason we use it. Most teams play counter-attack when they face us. With 3 CBs it's easier to defend and we're less exposed when caught on loss of possesion.

Conte might be considered as modern coach but he's typical one when you see how he builds the team: from the back. You can see that when you look at our formation and mercato moves.

So you don't think the need to prevent Bonucci being left to defend one-on-one is a significant factor?

I'd also suggest Pirlo is major reason for the 3 CBs.

Playing just two CBs and no genuine DM did tend to leave Juve looking pretty vulnerable at times last season - even with Chiellini playing at LB.

Bonucci has improved a lot in one-one-ones imo. Pirlo is good at defending he's just not that fast when it comes to sprinting so he's often left behind on counter attacks.

Pirlo's not good at defending.

He's not as bad as some people have made him out to be over the years, but he's not good at it.

Bonucci is improving, but would you feel confident in him playing as one of two CBs - particularly if he was actually required to mark a striker from there, rather than playing sweeper as he normally does just now?

Not Bonucci, but if we went with a back 4, I'd have Chiellini and Barzagli as the CBs. Obviously that again exposes our lack of a LB with any real defensive ability. But as Nick says, Bonucci does really well as a sweeper. Infact if you consider that his role is much more as SW than CB then infact just now we are effectively playing with two CBs - Chiellini and Barzagli

Our flow is much better in the 433. We utilize our best SS's in a way that brings out the best in them more often.

The 352 might accommodate Pirlo, but when he played in the 433 last season he did just fine. #undefeated

We have such sublime talents in Gio & Mirko that when they can sweep in from the left we are so much more dangerous...

So much more dangerous.

I can't see Conte using 4-3-3 right now. We lack classy offensive wingers (only Gio and Mirko) as well as strikers. In longer term I could see us switching to 4-3-3 as it's easier to find players for this formation than for 3-5-2. Also it's impossible to replace Pirlo so we'll have to use Pogba (I think) who is a different player and is better defensively but not that good as playmaker.
