That's true but we can't just have Pirlo and Marchisio do it all on the midfield. We play with 3 midfielders together or 2 controlling players like Vidal and Marchisio and than Pirlo in a more attakking role like against Parma. Vidal has great reaction-play and speed which we need to take controle of the midfield and counter attack.

When we have a comfortable lead, I'd like to see us rest Pirlo and try Marchisio-Vidal. Besides the need to keep Pirlo fresh, it'd be interesting to see how the M-V duo works as a contingency plan in case we are without Pirlo. It might also turn out to be the pairing we rely on in the long term.

Neither one of them have good vision, neither is an excellent passer.

That is probably Conte's preferred system but Pirlo's form/rep forced him to change.

M-V is good for league play and old Juve made good use of 2 DMs... but did it work in CL? or will it work without superstars up front?

Who knows, but Pirlo should be open to resting a few games here and there since it should extend his career anyway.

PIRLO-VIDAL-MARCHISIO: THE BACKBONE OF CONTE'S JUVE

Midfield in three, as rarely happened to Juventus in recent years . Not even with Zidane we hadn't a midfield in three, because in fact the French genius could come in and do a little defensive moves. And because Juve have always had very strong wings, that is the real lack at present.


Not even with Diego because the Brazilian cut inside , though without giving the support that was expected.


This time, de facto, is a three midfield(wingers play a particular role). Pirlo front of the defense, albeit at a slightly more advanced then the classic defensive mediate from the 50s, but in the rearmost position compared to Xavi. So Vidal and Marchisio to play around.

I must say that i disagree with you Red. I dont think that we played with 3 defenders. I think that we played 4-3-3, slightly modified, we didnt have a classic RW but Licht had the whole right side just for himself. That is why we had 3 Mid's and Esti as a LW so that Juve would be unbalanced, focusing more players on the left and forcing Napoli to also take more players to that side thus making things easier for Licht to work his magic on the right. That was the whole point as Conte said, for he considered Maggio to be the biggest threat. Maybe im wrong, but that is what i think i saw.
