Seriously this is plain stupid.

I won't say anything about how good I think he is, that's gonna take too long time.

You might disagree with me about him being the best keeper in the world but you have to admit that he is at least top ten. So there might be one or two better keepers today but do we really need the best keeper in the world if we have one of the top ten?
Don't we have bigger problems?
A crap defence with a middleage of over 30 for example. Buffon is only 26 and can stay with us for years to come. We could buy Kahn and keep him for a year or so. Not a very good long-term solution.

OK, how about this angle. Instead of a he-said/she-said, tastes-great/less-filling argument that's going no where, how about this different angle (I'm not a firm believer, just trying to change gears in this thread)...

Calciomercato or stock market: buy low, sell high.

Juve has done this a lot over the years. Sell Buffon or Nedved now? Probably not as much of a premium as a year ago. (Zidene, anyone?)

It's clear that this year Juve will post one of their worst financial results in at least 7 years. And to fund future acquisitions, etc., why sell your best players at a discount in an off year?

Thoughts?

i want buffon to be replaced.i know some of you will be thinking that i've gne off my rocker but just hear me out, please.

he is just so overrated its irritating sometimes.i get non-juve fans telling me he is the best GK in the world and i'm too embarrassed to say otherwise.but i know he isn't.far from it.maybe some of you would remember a thread titled "Don't Shoot Me" some time back.his great save from zidane's FK in last season's semi finals shut my mouth for a while, but i knew it was a matter of time before his faults came to light again.

his inability to catch simple shots and that flat-footedness still exist.anyone saw how he conceded that first goal against parma?how did he manage to spill that shot is beyond me,and his attempt at a second save was horrible.seriously,he looked like he was one of those fans at a concert, waving his arms in the air in a sing-along.quite unorthodox if you ask me.

firstly,he is not as good as many think he is.

secondly,he is one of our most marketable assets.15-20m shouldn't be impossible.

thirdly,we can get a better replacement.frey would be my top choice, even stekelenburg, sereni, cudicini wouldn't be bad at all.

believe it or not,we do need an upgrade between the sticks.when have we seen him make a great save this season?dozens of keepers have had better games against us while buffon has let us down.jsut because leggro, thuram and montero have been letting players ghost past them we assume its all their fault.

i really have no idea why nobody else notices that buffon is a major factor in our downfall.
I stopped reading when i came across Stekelenburg

Ok
1st Buffon is the best keeper in the world and there is no doubt about it
2nd Buffon has won the MVP in some of europe`s awards which includes goalkeepers and players and he was the 1st Keeper to do this
3rd Buffon is the best keeper ever to play for the Azzuri and maybe even in the world

If you remember Juve payed a lot to get him I think it was something like 40-50M$!!!!! and to tell you the truth I never doubt this deal! I always knew it would be paid off and it did

When I saw this message in this thread I thought you are a Juve hater or some other club supporter who want Buffon for his club and is trying to make a fuss in Juve`s supporters so they would like to get some other GK then Buffon and by that they will try to protest and get Buffon out of the team!

Ok, Buffon won the statistical keeper award, measured by somethng like who ever blocked the most shots out of so many on target shots. Given, that it could be a passinto goal, but still it has to have some truth, if the top 3 were buffon casillas and kahn. It is soooo unfair to blame buffon, he maybe made one or two errors, but who doesnt? Poor buffon has been so exposed, and he is about 95 percent not to blame for all the goals. Give the guy a break!! for good saves, look at reggina, brescia and depor.

This threads really is wack. i i dont usually critisize threads.

comparing Cudicini to Buffon!!?

for almost three years now, i can only remmeber 1 clear-cut mistake Buffon has made. the CL game vs Newcastle. (Though he did make some awesome saves in that same game later on)

Like anyone other player, he's had his "off days," but they were mostly because the Defense sucked. (Last year's Juve 0-3 ManU, this year's Juve 1-3 Inter, and the Arsenal 3-1 Juve 2001/2002 CL game)

compare Buffon to:
Dida (who's been great, but still makes those stupid mistakes)
Abbiati :howler: (no need to mention what he did this season)
Antonioli (see Abiati)
Cudicini (great, but makes too many game costing mistake over the past couple of seasons.)
Khan: Great, but even he makes mistakes(in important games too), like the Real Madrid game, and the WC Final. besides, he's old... no need to think about him.
Tim Howard: **see Cudicini**
Lehmann: **See Khan**
Cassilas: Very good, but no where near as experienced or compsed as Buffon.
Toldo: very close to Buffon, but still not as good. he's a lot older too.

Buffon may not have the best reflexes or the craziest looking save , but he IS THE MOST CONSISTANT KEEPER. His mistakes are very raree, he is very composed/calm, he doesn't have a weak point (except maybe for freekicks, but the way Montero and co. Tackle, we've had a lot against us).

please note: there is a difference between making mistakes and not making a possible save.

I'm gonna buck the trend here and congratulate Desmond for opening the thread. You've raised some very valid points yet all people have done so far is laugh at them without providing any real answers to them.

Now first of all gigi is a class keeper. I know it, you know it, we all know it. However, over the years he has been known to flap at crosses, spill some shots he shouldn't, and the flat footedness is also an issue. If you look at it like that then maybe there are better keepers out there, but the likes of Frey and Carini have similar defects from what I've seen; I wouldn't necessarily consider them an upgrade. Kahn and Santi are ageing so they really wouldn't be an option either.

People that are more consistent than Buffon certainly exist; the likes of Niemi and Given in the EPL I can refer to as they consistently perform week in week out. these gys don't possess them match winning brilliance of a Buffon at his best, though, and when you're juve you only want just that, the best.

Then you look at the fact that we spent a whopping £32m on the guy and his marketing value is exceedingly high unlike many of his rivals. he also has age on his side, and hasn't been helped by having a past it Montero/ferrara and a simply abysmal Leggrotaglie in front of him, plus an off form Thuram.

Personally it would take a lot more to make me want to cast Buffon aside than whats happened this year; until a viable replacement can be mentioned then he's a stayer IMO. :)

Buffon and Zambro are our only steady performers this season. Selling one of them would be questioning the name of football. But then again, Juve did let go of Davids one of our best players last season ;)

well said Nedved.. you cant blame a keeper with non existant defence.. no wonder he is letting in so much. MY motto is, unless the keeper pushes it in the net himself, it is never his fault.

it was more obvious that juve would let go of Davids since last summer.
Davids has been left on the bench on purpose even when in shape. Against Milan in the SuperCoppa, he didn't play a minute. He's been left in Turin for a couple of away games too.

Zambrotta and Buffon, and Miccoli are the least likely to be replaced.

Now don't be too harsh on Buffon. Maybe he hasn't been the best goalkeeper this year, but you gotta remember last year. We would not have reached the C.L. Final without him. With all the other positions that need upgrading, it would be rather stupid on finding a replacement for Buffon when he is doing fine. Concentrate on the midfield and defence.
