Arggh been working on this all day. Finally got Sphinx Search installed :) Was pissing me off that it took so long to search for new posts so I bought a plugin for vBulletin that works with Sphinx. The main reason the site is slow is that all you bastards keep clicking "New posts" which causes quite a bit of server load.
I confess... I do that more often than I even post. Is there a way we can optimize that? I'm like in a Skinner box with that damn thing.

Sphinx sounds like it has massive promise though. Thanks! :)

Still no solution for the last unread that appears to the left of the thread not the one IN the thread?
Nah I haven't spent time researching it. Will do later.

For now click "View First Unread" at the first post.

Just FYI I ran a database backup now as I'm trying some new stuff.

Normally this is done automatically every day at around 6.30 AM Central European Time. This is when we have the least amount of visitors.

When the database is being backed up the tables are locked (else it can't backup) so you can't actually post or at times see the site.

The database size is around 3.5 GB and with over 3 million posts it takes a little while to complete.

Now that you know this, don't moan if the site doesn't work for about 15 minutes at around 6.30 - 7 am CET ;)

"New Posts" are now being stored in the database with automatic updating instead of using a cookie.

Still can't quite figure out why it only takes you to the first unread page (at the top) instead of the first unread post. I'll figure it out...

get some sleep man geez! :D
    Hehe soon :D

    Thanks Martin :)

Can't believe how fast search is now, it used to take at least a second, sometimes up to ten seconds with lots of people online.

Not a fan of removing the "old" posts. Where's "todays posts" anyways?
What do you mean removing old posts?

Today's posts is normally only displayed for guests, it was removed when I updated the styles. I'll see if I can readd it.

Sorry, that's how it works since I've replaced vBulletin Search with Sphinx Search.
