Ibrahimovic "back pass" has Spanish pundits purring
Reuters, Sunday March 28 2010
MADRID, March 28 (Reuters) - Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic had soccer pundits purring on Sunday but not because of the goal that gave the champions a 1-0 win at Real Mallorca on the previous evening to put the champions top of La Liga.
It was a piece of rarely seen improvisation that caught the eye and prompted praise for the way the Swede creates space and scoring chances for his team mates.
Pedro sent over a deep cross from the right and Ibrahimovic, seeing Lionel Messi in space behind him, used his back to direct the ball into the Argentina forward's path.
Although Messi fired his first-time shot over the bar, Marca daily dubbed the move by the former Inter Milan striker "an amazing trick".
Juan Cruz, a columnist in AS, said Ibrahimovic's play created space that his predecessor Samuel Eto'o, who went to Inter in a swap deal with Ibrahimovic last summer, would have been unwilling to relinquish.
"Generosity probably doesn't feature very highly in Ibrahimovic's character but he certainly plays in a way that opens up space that allow his team mates to penetrate more easily," Cruz wrote.
"Lionel Messi's game has improved with Ibrahimovic on the pitch," he added.

The Swede himself said in a television interview after the Mallorca game it was a shame Messi had failed to score.
"It would have been sweet," he said with a shrug.

Ok, so who's right and who's wrong?
I read in this forum that Messi is being frustrated with Ibra and how Zlatan is slowing down Barca etc. On the other hand, it's true that Messi is playing like he's never played before.

Min. 1:30 for the back pass.

That is complete bullshit

Can't believe anybody bought that let alone you Alen. Zlatan has been just above average overall this season, to even begin to argue that Zlatan is more useful to Barca than Eto'o was is laughable to say the least.

I like Zlatan, he along with Berbatov(to a lesser extent and when at his best) are players that make football look so effortless and easy, i'd prefer if he played at another team where he would be given more freedom. But to say that he's been a good signing for Barca or to even begin to imply that is just :sergio:

I expect him to be better with time as he gets more used to his role, and i do not doubt that he is overall one of the best in the world and a much better player than Eto'o, but at the time being he hasn't delivered for Barca.

I like Zlatan....... but at the time being he hasn't delivered for Barca.
This is really arguable, Fred. I guess it has a lot to do with the expectations, but I checked his full stats this year, and considering how Barca has minimum 11 more matches to play (maximum 14), these aren't bad numbers and can become great numbers if Zlatan keeps scoring and assisting with the same rate he was so far.

La Liga:
24 matches (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zlatan_Ibrahimović)
15 goals (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/stats/topscorers?league=esp.1&year=2009&seasontype=1&cc=5739)
6 assists (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/stats/topassists?league=esp.1&seasontype=4&cc=5739)

So, 21 goals+assists on 24 matches

CL:
8 matches
4 goals (http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/statistics/players/type=topscorers/index.html)
2 assists (http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/statistics/players/type=assists/index.html)

So, 6 goals+assists on 8 matches

Total: 27 goals+assists on 32 matches
-----------------------
Also:

World club championship
2 matches
0 goals
1 assist (http://www.fifa.com/tournaments/archive/clubworldcup/uae2009/results/match=300111968/summary.html)

Coppa del rey
2 matches
1 goal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zlatan_Ibrahimović)
0 assists

This makes it a total of 29 goals+assists (20 goals+9 assists) on 36 matches.
------------------------

If all goes well, without injuries, I can easily imagine him scoring 25 goals+ more than 10 assists.
If that's disappointing, especially for a first season, well, then folks seriously have to lower their expectations.

Its not about the goals Alen, any decent striker will get goals for Barca.

Also i have to say, when your playing for Barca, the least you are expected to score with such quality service is 20 league goals, the very least. At the moment in the league he hasn't been consistent enough, and has had several bad games. He also loses the ball alot and still does not link as well as he should with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. Most Barca fans would tell you that he hasn't lived up to the expectations this season, and most Real fans are laughing at Barca for making such a signing.

Now imo, it is kind of understandable, i never thought of Zlatan as a consistent out and out goalscorer, he is more of a complete forward that does a little of everything. He needs the freedom to move around, pick the ball from deep, be a creative outlet for his team etc. Despite any statistics he might have, he still has not been as good as he should be for Barca. I do expect him to be better next season though, once he gets more accustomed to his new role.

But has he scored 6 goals in the CL? I have to say, that is very good. Off the top of my head, i don't actually remember him having poor games in the CL other than the Inter game in Italy.

As for the use of statistics, i really don't think they are enough to judge a player. Statistics could be so misleading, i remember one of the seasons Makelele had a better passing percentage than Fabregas, but that was probably because he always made sideway passes while Cesc took more risks. Kaka's statistics don't look bad this season, yet he has been labeled a flop by Real fans themselves.

No, only 4 goals. 4 goals and 2 assists. I remember the goals but I don't remember the assists. Still, UEFA is registering 2 assists on their official site so no reason not to trust them.
