If I were to waive a Swastica flag at a match and say "well, it's not about the deaths of thousands of Jews, but rather a symbol of lollypop heaven, as that's what I think it is.." doesn't make it any less offensive.

And the Confederate Flag is more a symbol of "states rights" in a federal system than it is of racism. The Confederacy, the American Civil War, and all the symbols associated with it have been misconstrued by revisionist historians. The Confederacy was not formed to promote racism, but rather to present the alternative of rural agrarianism to the aggressive urban commercialism proselytized by the Union.

But, in the end, your point stands. Racism sucks, and people who use symbols for their racist meanings should really stop and think about the power of symbols and the way that their use can be destructive to all parties involved.

Come on, Ian. It was a flag that indeed promoted freedom, but not for people of color. That in itself is something not acceptable.

If I were to create a movement where I schemed to kill everyone over 50 years of age and promoted my ideology under a flag of a peace symbol, executed my goal of killing over 2 million people, would it still be alright to let the flag fly at a football match after years of torture? I don't think so. If people were waiving swastikas at various matches well I don't have to tell you the reaction it would receive.

I guess that's true. But in the perspective of an American who can't stand some of the racism seen regularly in the states, it just does not go over well with me. Perhaps it doesn't stand for slavery in true meaning, but we have to make sure it's not being used as something to propagate those same suspicions.

To be honest, I've seen racism on six continents, everywhere I've ever been. American racism is surely not the worst.

From the perspective of a foreigner who has spent a fair amount of time in the states: it is commendable, that as a nation with such a long and storied history of genocide, racism, oppression, and torture; that you have made such amazing progress in your relatively short national history. To be honest, I've seen racism on six continents, everywhere I've ever been. American racism is surely not the worst.

One of the scary things, however, is while we are progressing as a nation in terms of accepting other races, we have other problems on our hands. We have a little financial collapse that continues to worsen, and a few experts say we are only a third of the way through it. While I voted for Obama, there seems to be a euphoria over him like he is the messiah, and he will fix our financial problems. Well even I know that our economic problems cannot be remedied by anything Obama does, and the reality of the situation is we are collapsing as a super power.

So while this happens, and our economy gets worse and worse, and our liberties are stripped from us, things might get so bad quickly that people will blame Obama for it. Unfortunately, seeing some of the opinions of our Republican friends who have pledged to criticize Obama no matter what happens, we could have another race problem on our hands in four to eight years. Knowing some people here, it could happen, where people say "damn Black President was always a bad idea !!" and so on, ad nauseum. This sheer trust of Obama could turn out to be a situation where everybody is so let down over him that they turn on him without looking back. We face a lot of problems ahead of us so I don't think we are out of the woods yet.

Real Madrid flags are really unimportant to be honest.
