To explain: Madrid finished 5th in the league in 1999/00, Zaragoza finished 4th but since Madrid had won the CL that season, they got the 4th spot and Zaragoza had to play in the UEFA Cup. Back then, there wasn't a rule in place by UEFA that gave an automatic spot to the previous year's CL winners, so it was a decision made independently by the Spanish FA.

yup got it in one :agree:

hence why i believe there is strong favouritism behind the scenes to ensure real madrid are well protected. Much like the time when the government 'bought' their training ground and effectively sold it back to them for nothing just to ease the club debts
