I still find this stuff absurd and the most telling facet of fan culture. Apparently if people had their way, we'd be watching matches consisting of Romans battling Carthaginians while the Barbarians take on the Shang Dynasty.
Dewd, Amauri doesn't even frickin want to play for Italy. I mean if he had been craving it, regardless of other circumstances, that would have been a different debate. But it's obvious that all he's doing is baiting Dunga with it, and if he does end up in the blue shirt it will be a second choice for him.

Do we have no sense of what national teams are meant to be for anymore? At the very least they should be made out of players who want to represent their nations.

Nothing to do with blood Andy
So then what constitutes being Italian? Amauri has lived in Italy for a number of years, knows the language, feels at home, et cetera, but only his name is different. So where does that leave Camoranesi then?

Oh, but he has Italian grandparents. That must make him more Italian than a guy that has lived in Italy practically all his life...

Ummm, this isn't the point. The point is the premise behind some of these objections by supposed "fans" that are purely hypocritical in nature.

    It works well in basketball.
99% of the European NT's have at least one American dude playing for the NT and yet we support our NT with equal passion, we're equally proud of a good result and equally sad after a defeat.

But you probably blame the American when you lose.

    Amauri to choose Italy?
    Tuesday 16 December, 2008
There are suggestions that Juventus striker Amauri will choose to represent Italy and will make his Azzurri debut against his native Brazil.

From January 1, Amauri is expected to become an Italian citizen thanks to his marriage to wife Cynthia.

The ex-Palermo marksman still hasn't committed his international future to his birth country Brazil and could opt to play for Italy instead.

According to Tuttosport, Italy Coach Marcello Lippi is ready to call Amauri for his squad, ironically, to face Brazil in a friendly in London at the Emirates Stadium on February 10.

However, there are also rumours that Brazil boss Carlos Dunga will try and pick Amauri for his squad for the match.

As yet, Amauri hasn't given any indication of where his heart lies, but he has hinted that he will play for whichever country calls him first.

Amauri is amongst Serie A's top scorers this term with 10 goals to his name.

He is easily the best Brazilian striker in the world though. I mean who's better than him? Fabiano? Jo? Wagner? or Sobis???
