Yes that is completely true... it has happened in several countries but as far as i know his was the only one to actually survive.

Use google or the like or check british news websites archives... There has been programs about it on tv many times and even 2 dramas based on his story in the last year
imagine all the trouble he'll have to go through if he decides to move to other place
"hello, queen? i want to move my country 50 miles up north" :howler:

As the only person from Azerbaijan, here is my list:

- you may drive on any side of the road, as long as you're either a cop, government official, or just have "friends" or relatives"
- culture is extremely diverse, with large proportion of Jews, Russians, Germans, East Europeans, Georgians, Armenians, Central Asians, etc.
- first element of national identity is oil. In the beginning of 20th century Baku oil fields were producing more than half of world's crude oil output, leading the way to the first Democratic Republic in the East (1912).
- second element is stergen fish and beluga caviar. There are only 5 countries that export this upscale product worldwide- those around the Caspian sea
- taxis are everywhere, you can find them 25 hours a day, 8 days a week
- you never arrive on time for meetings
- people are fluent in Azeri, English, Russian and Turkish
- people greet each other by shaking hands and giving a kiss on a cheek
- you always negotiate prices
- there are 8 climatic zones out of 12 available

In HOLLAND (guarantee for weirdness :D), we:

  • Smoke marihuana legally
  • Have legal prostitution
  • Have laws on euthanasia
  • Have gay marriages
  • Live beneath sea-level
  • Consider travelling 20 kilometers as "far" and prepare for it like we are going to travel around the world
  • Look down on the rest of Europe
  • Respect water and bring it into our cities, our lives in many forms
  • Consider our "war against water" far more important than the "international war on terrorism", which only few people care about
  • Have a life expectancy that is 4 years shorter than in the surrounding countries because of air pollution
  • Have 487 people living on every square kilometer
  • Have a population of which 93% is afraid of heights
  • Have no mountains
  • Do not celebrate any UN introduced days such as "Labour day"
  • Celebrate Santa Claus' birthday twice, on December 6th and December 25th
  • Have a population of which 94% has some form of degree in the English language
  • Have a queen who cycles to work
  • Respect the Germans for their endless list of achievements and hate them for it at the same time

In Malaysia,

* we have mamak shops, something thats REALLY important to us citizens of Malaysia. Personally I think countries that do not have mamak shops are missing on the finer things of life :D

* We tend to boast about our country (often mistook for patriotism) and we've improved, but we've never really looked into the serious problems of our country.

* We're a multi-racial country, and we respect different races and religions. In that aspect I'm very proud to be Malaysian.

* LOTS of poseurs. However you spell it.

* Most Malaysians (90%) are EPL fans. 70% are probably glory hunters.

* Malaysia, though still relatively unknown to some people, is really improving - we have F1 in Sepang, our arts and clubbing scene is doing very well, etc. We're exposing our people to all kinds of things and scenes now

* Every state respects their Sultans, however I feel that the Sultans are just taking advantage of their status and is actually quite useless to their respective states.

Not really.
Depends on how you look at it.

By legalising (officially: tolerating) the smoking of marihuana, the Dutch government has taken away a great source of income of drug smugglers in the Netherlands, also tackling the existence of many organised criminals dealing in it. The number of people using it has not grown.

By legalising prostitution and putting it under governmental control, the Netherlands (in comparison to its EU partners and the US) suffer virtually no illegal prostitution in which women are kidnapped from third world countries and forced to sell their bodies against their will. Again, organised crime and people smugglers have been put off-side.

While the rest of the world still uses banning and military force to battle these phenomenon of modern western societies without achieving something that even remotely resembles a victory, the Dutch have already mostly destroyed these terrible aspects of life.

Look further and don't judge so easily.

Where I live there is a extremely less chance of violence due to acohol, despite on this Island pubs for years being allowed open for 24-hours (and in certain bars, it being for girls only £5 for as many drinks as you want)

funny how everyone says that the way its useful to them. we had a conference at university some time ago and some "expert" said that that use of legal and illegal drungs has increased dramaticly. are there any official figures on that?

The Centre for Drug Investigation (an official semi-governmental organisation) realeases reports on this subject regularly, I found one from 2003 on the internet:

    http://www.cedro-uva.org/lib/abraham.licit.press.html

I realise 2003 is already two years ago but soft drugs have now been available to the population for many years, well before 2003.

Now, it is in Dutch but even without speaking the language I think you can understand that the usage of Cannabis has only slightly increased in a number similar to the growth of the population and part of the population who use drugs most frequently.

There has been no dramatical increase.

If you want to translate the article, you can use http://babelfish.altavista.com which now also offers Dutch-English translations.

Correct me if im wrong, but isnt the 25th a time to celebrate jesus?

And i heard that you guys hand your presents out on the 6th (nikolaus)

Also, commenting on the german-dutch relationship, over here we still talk about famous WC victories against the dutch, and we are happy to see you lose, not to see us win, that is why the recent 1-1 draw was monumental because you still didnt win :D

anyway, i love holland. Very open minded and liberal country imo
