Giannichedda: “Too bad not being there ”

Giuliano Giannichedda had to quit during the game against Cagliari because of a muscular problem that has not perfectly solved. For this reason, he will not be able to play Saturday against his former team, Lazio. “It is a real pity – he says – because I would have liked it a lot. Unfortunately I haven’t completely recovered”. Giannichedda is very satisfied of his first months with Juventus: “I am very pleased. Being an alternative in a team such as Juve is reason for great satisfaction, also because the schedule is really busy and there is room for everybody, as shown in these latest couple of months”.

Capello always looks forward

There are only a few days left before the end of 2005 and it is inevitable that the congratulations for Capello and his team, always at the top, cannot be counted. When the journalists make him notice this, Juventus coach, who always looks forward, is already focused on the next match against Lazio and answers: “Let’s not think about the praise and the numbers, neither to what we have conquered so far. Let’s think about the future and what we will have to achieve from now on”. Capello, in fact, talks about Lazio: “It is playing well, it is in great psycho-physical conditions, plays a good football and got Oddo and Rocchi back. It is going to be a difficult game, just like all others, especially since we play away”.

They ask him about Emerson, Mutu and Giannichedda, who are not called for: “Emerson has not recovered yet, Mutu has muscular problems, Giannichedda is out because he got injured during the match against Cagliari”. There are no anticipation of the team, as usual, but when they ask him if Blasi will play, the answer is obvious. Nothing else, though. So, the choices of the team’s coach will be made public only on the match-day. Capello, however, talks about Vieira’s recovery: “Now he returned to be himself, but also when he was not 100% he always plays good games. The only thing he was missing was some continuity”. Again about the match against Lazio: “We hope to do well. Whenever the opposing team attacks, it has good qualities. We should be good at highlighting their difficulties instead of their values”.

Lazio vs Juventus 1-1

At the Olimpico, Capello lines up Blasi in the midfield in place of Emerson and Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet in attack, while Lazio’s attacking pair are Di Canio and recovered Rocchi. In the first few minutes, the most active man on the Biancoazzurri’s side is Oddo: the back’s first action occurs on 3’ minutes with a cross from the right the with a free kick that ends high over the crossbar. Juventus hits back with Ibrahimovic’s right-footed kick from the edge of the box which is stopped by Peruzzi and then with a tricky left-footed shot by Zambrotta that is narrowly wide of target. The game is not very emotional until 16’ minutes, when Thuram loses the ball in the box and Manfredini serves it for Rocchi who can beat Abbiati (1-0). Three minutes later, it’s Oddo again who attempt on goal but his right-footed kick from the edge of the penalty area gets out. Juve try to fight back on 21’ minutes with Vieira’s long-range finish which ends high over the bar. The draw is finally achieved five minutes later: Camoranesi takes a free kick from the right, Nedved overcomes Peruzzi with a header and Trezeguet, again with a header, shoots the ball in from a two-steps range (1-1). The game is often interrupted by minor but frequent fouls and the show suffers from that. The only occasion worth noting after the draw goal occurs on 45’ minutes when Chiellini shoots at goal with a left-footed kick but Peruzzi succeed in deflecting it for a corner.

The second half too is opened by Chiellini’s initiative when, after 2 minutes, he kicks Camoranesi’s cross from the flag high over the bar. On 9’ minutes Ibrahimovic controls well a difficult ball from Chiellini and shoots at goal with a right-footed kick which unfortunately misses the target and two minutes later he invents a precious pass to Trezeguet who sprints from a regular position and shoots on goal but Peruzzi successfully deflects the ball for a corner. The second half time seems to replay the first half: much struggling into the midfield, discontinuous game and few occasions: on 25’ minutes, Nedved gets Ibrahimovic started, the latter tries a left-footed shot but it ends out. Three minutes later, Trezeguet starts a counterattack from the right flank and passes the ball to the centre for Ibrahimovic, who is anticipated in the corner. Lazio hit back first with Tare and then with Manfredini who, both with headers, cannot find the goal. On 35’ minutes, Capello makes his first substitution, sending Del Piero in to replace Trezeguet and two minutes later Zalayeta in place of Camoranesi. Juventus start growing: on 40’ minutes, Zalayeta moves along the right flank and puts the ball in, Peruzzi gets out of the area but cannot grab the ball, caught by Nedved who ends up being anticipated before being able to shoot at goal. Pavel tries again on 42’ minutes but his right-footed shot is punched back by Peruzzi.
In the final minutes, Lazio try to get dangerous with Pandev and Liverani but Abbiati keeps good guard. It ends 1-1.

Capello: “A good result”

“It was a tough and manly game, played with determination. The result is good anyway: we tried to win but we did not succeed, congratulations to Lazio”. Fabio Capello earns his first draw of the season at the end of a tough match which has confirmed the excellent condition of Delio Rossi’s squad: “We played against a good side, very aggressive; in the first 20 minutes of the match, they performed with a remarkable intensity, then they slowed down but we could not make the most of the occasions we created and furthermore we conceded an incredible goal.” The Bianconeri got dangerous particularly in the second half but found in their way a Peruzzi in an outstanding shape: “Angelo was really good – Capello continues – I praised him in the bootroom. We sometimes could not feed the strikers like we wanted but this is Lazio’s merit too. And when we could, Peruzzi just outperformed himself”

Champions: in the eight-finals against Werder Bremen

It is going to be Werder Bremen the opposing team of Juventus during the Champions League eight-finals. Juventus will play its first match away Wednesday, February 22nd, while the home game at Delle Alpi will be Tuesday, March 7th. The German team had to beat Basel during the third preliminary round before getting to the Champions League final phase. After the 2-1 loss in Switzerland during the first-leg match, Werder imposed itself in the second-leg winning 3-0. The Germans were inserted in group C and qualified second for the eight-finals, after Barcelona. 7 were the points totalized by Juventus future opponents in the preliminary round, the same amount as Udinese, but because of better results in the direct matches against this team, (a 1-1 even game in Udine and a suffered 4-3 home win), mister Schaaf’s men passed the turn.
The Germans closed the round with 12 goals scored and the same amount undergone.
The match between Juventus and Werder Bremen is the very first: there are in fact no official precedents between the two clubs.

Here are the remaining eight-finals matches:

Chelsea – Barcelona

Real Madrid – Arsenal

Bayern Munich – Milan

Psv Eindhoven – Olympic Lyon

Ajax – Inter

Benfica – Liverpool

Glasgow Rangers - Villareal

Comments on the draw: Capello

Fabio Capello commented this way on the Champions League draw that will see Juventus play against Werder Bremen during the eight-finals: “All German teams will come from the Christmas break, so they will definitely be rested. It is not going to be easy, Werder is a fast team and is dangerous in the counterattack”. They make him notice that it could have been worse: “The two most important challenges in the eight-finals are Chelsea-Barcelona, teams entitled and among the favourites to the final success, as well as Bayern Munich – Milan”.

Comments on the draw: Del Piero and Ibrahimovic

Alessandro Del Piero comments this way on the draw: “German teams are always difficult to play against, they are tough with great individualities. Actually, any challenge would have been hard at this point because they are all strong teams, even if with different qualities”.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: “ It is definitely going to be a tough opponent to face. It is a good team, Klose and Micoud are two experienced players”

Comments on the draw: Kovac

Robert Kovac is, without any doubt, one of the players that best knows the next opponent in the Champions League, Werder Bremen, as he comes from the German championship. “It is a strong team, it plays a very offensive football and each year it scores many goals in the Bundesliga. It is going to be tough to play there because they are very strong at home”. Among the most dangerous players, Kovac points out three of them: “Micoud, Klose and Klasnic”.

We came to this match without any conviction whatsoever! We lost the midfield and never regained it. Behrami was a thorn on our backside & if he didn't get off things might have been different. Not that he was good, nope, but he was everywhere. Getting involved in everything. It was an ill tempered match and that is what I expected from Lazio. My only concern is that Cap seems to not notice or he completely ignores tactical changes(the least he could have done was to yell at the players to slow things down, to play our own game) when things are not working out. It was obvious that we got it wrong early on as Lazio were all over us.
Abbiati - 6 Usual performance althought should have stayed at his line when Thuram made that blunder.
Zambrotta - 6 Queit game. What we are losing on the left by keeping him on the right is just frightening. Get Sagnol ASAP.
Thuram - 5 It's been said - Horrid blunder!
Canna -6 Not much to do as this game was mainly concentrated in the midfield.
Chiellini -5 A great shot which unfortunately was aimed directly at Perruzi. He's not showing any signs of improving.
Camo - 6 Decent game considering we didn't own the midfield. Fantastic free kick leading to our goal.
Veira - 5.5 Still not at his best. WHat gives? Has he not recovered fully or is it a case of lost form?
Blasi - 5Covers most of the pitch doing nothing.
Nedved - 6.5 Good assist for the goal. Lively and determined.
Trez - 6 Got the goal. Should have scored another but for Peruzzi.
Zlatan - 5 Things did not work out as anticipated. Too aggressive earlier & lucklastre later. Brilliant pass to Trez & a lovely superfast nutmeg on a 1 on 2 move.

Capello -4.5 Read the game early and make changes or direct the players to do something else.

The tie will help Juventus in the long run. It will make the players concentrate more and it will give Capello reason to get on their cases. Their form will improve psychologically.

Thuram is a great leader, who, if it wasn't for the Lazio gift, has been in spectacular form in the last three games.

This team has given 2005 a lecture in calcio and i am glad i was here to savor it live-n-direct!

Grazie Juve, sei la piu grande.
