Juventus Thrash Palermo To Keep Up The Pace
Juventus 5 – 0 Palermo
A very convincing performance by the Bianconeri allowed the team to obtain three precious points against a disappointing Palermo side which failed to trouble their opponents throughout tHe game.
The Old Lady needed to keep up with Inter and Roma following their wins on Saturday whereas Palermo arrived to this game with six positive results behind their backs, even though only one match was won during this period.
Juventus dominated Palermo from the first minutes, creating a lot of chances in the process, with the Rosanero failing to trouble Gigi Buffon in the initial 45 minutes.
Claudio Ranieri opted to field Vincenzo Iaquinta instead of Alessandro Del Piero from the first minute and in the end this proved a good choice. The Bianconeri started out strong and in the 4th minute Iaquinta almost opened the score thanks to a free-kick 23 metres away from goal, but Agliardi managed to deflect in corner.
Two minutes later it was David Trezeguet who tried his luck from 12 metres, but the ball went out. Another direct free-kick by Iaquinta saw Agliardi save in corner yet again, but in the 29th minute, the Palermo goalkeeper was unable to stop Trezeguet from putting Juventus ahead as the Frenchman turned towards goal an assist by Nicola Legrottaglie following a corner kick by Mauro German Camoranesi.
In the 33rd minute Pavel Nedved almost scored the second goal for the Old Lady, but his shot from 17 metres was blocked by Barzagli after Agliardi was out of goal. Eight minutes later Iaquinta made it 2-0 for the Bianconeri as he managed to react quickly after falling down in the penalty area and shoot from close range past the Rosanero keeper.
Colantuono decided to send Cavani on the field at the start of the second half and Palermo started surfacing around the penalty area of Buffon, even though Juventus remained in control of the game.
Nedved tried to lob a header over the goalkeeper in the 48th minute, but the ball went just over the bar. In the 52nd minute, Palermo had their first shot on goal when Zaccardo shot towards goal following a Brienza cross, but Buffon saved his goal.
In the 58th minute it was Palermo again who went close, but Amauri's header went just inches wide on the right hand side of Bufffon. From then onwards it was just Juventus as Del Piero substituted Iaquinta in the 68th minute and three minutes later Pinturiccho scored a wonderfully struck free-kick which left Agliardi petrified.
Same situation occurred a few minutes later as Marchionni replace Camoranesi in the 72nd minute, and in the 75th minute the former Parma winger scored following a good move on the right hand side which saw him dribble Agliardi and deposit the ball in goal for the 4-0.
Not much happened in the final minutes, apart from Nedved's personal battle with Agliardi. The Czech player tried to score yet again in 80th minute, but this time, despite the ball going towards goal, it was well saved by the Palermo keeper.
However in the final minute, Nedved won a penalty generously awarded by the referee which Del Piero converted without too much problem to seal the result 5-0 in favour of the Old Lady.
In the end it was a well-deserved win for Juventus who kept the pace of the teams ahead of them and will now travel to San Siro next weekend with more confidence as they prepare to clash against Milan.
This was a bad slip by Palermo and Colantuono will have a difficult job to make his team forget this defeat and get back on the right track.
