Well, after Neddy's first half sendoff, I think this was the ultimate result we were all afraid of... and expecting.
Did we look like a team ready to take on Arsenal? Far from it. But then this was a match where we should have rested a few stars, and ultimately we really weren't able to.
For the record, Roma blows. I mean seriously. How this squad actually won 11 consecutive matches is a freak of science, because every one of their players on the pitch today looked like they were playing for a relegation-battling club, but without having any of the motivation of a relegation. Why the hell is Perotta on the Italy NT? Without Totti, or Cassano or Montella for that matter, I couldn't tell the difference between AS Roma and Empoli. Mancini is their only worthy player on the pitch these days, and Zambro largely shut him down -- he was practically invisible in this match.
And Dacourt? A week after Roma's entire front office goes sucking their own wankers over how much De Rossi's fair play gesture exemplifies the spirit of Roma, here we had a guy who was down and injured, no he's back up, and, "Ooh -- Juve have possession and are advancing?" -- he is suddenly overcome again with injury after not being touched by anyone and cannot go on.
Nedved -- you've been so instrumental for us of late. Why the idiotic fouls? I thought you learned something when you missed the CL Final in '03 with a stupid foul. But I cannot lay the blame fully for the lost points on him. We may have come out in the second half looking surprisingly aggressive in Roma's half with 10 men, but our attack had no teeth and was laughable. And by putting Balza in back in for Trez, we were obviously playing the waiting game -- flipping the coin between 3 and 1 point for the outcome of this match.
Ultimately, giving away the corners a man down did us in. Just really disappointing.
Buffon - A couple of good saves. Can't blame him much for the goal. 6
Thuram - Good speed to get back. Generally good match. 6.5
Canna - Some great stops. No major mistakes. I hate to call him MOM, but he's my best option. 7
Zambro - A mixed bag. Big points for essentially taking Mancini out of this match. But he turned the ball over in a dangerous position in the first half, and he didn't mark his man close enough for the Roma goal. 6
Chiellini - Wasn't distastrous, as I half expect these days. He added little on attack and took a lot of fouls. 6
Camo - I was hoping for some better penetration on the wing and better crosses from him. Otherwise, he had an unusually decent day at the middle of the pitch. 6
Emerson - Nice goal. And I always get worried when this team relies on Emo to press forward and contribute more in attack ... always a bad sign. 6.5
Vieira - OK at ball control, but some of his passes were off. Better than usual of late, but then consider the competition. 5.5
Nedved - Good ball movement and pace. But the silly fouls killed us. On that alone, you get the anti-man-of-the-match. Fortunately we're only playing Treviso next. 4.5
Del Piero - Barely in. NR
Ibrahimovic - Some good, unselfish pass choices for a change, but his execution of them was all wrong. Nice shot on goal that was blocked by Roma at close range. Not effective with possession. 5.5
Subs:
Trezeguet - Added little, but didn't get a lot of touches. Not half bad with the ones he had, but missed target. 5.5
Balzaretti - Weaker ball-handling, but made a small impact in defense. 6
Mutu - No chance to even see him. NR
Capello - Played not to lose -- didn't play to win. And we got exactly that. Balza for Trez sub sealed our fate for really ever scoring again in this one. And why Mutu so damn late in this match? 4.5
This Scudetto race is not over yet, folks...
